Quite fancy the Timex Marlin reissue myself as a dress watch - anyone any experience of these?
Had a Bambino briefly but it was pretty large for a dress watch.
That's a good point. Some so-called dress watches are far easier to refinish if they get a scratch or scuff too, the elaborate bezels on sports watches are all too easily damaged and usually can`t be rectified without replacement.
The heavier the watch the more energy to dissipate when it hits a hard surface from a height, none of them like being dropped and despite the shockproofing (which only protects the balance pivots) the 'shock of hitting a hard surface can and will cause problems.

These two were around £700 each on sale. Over budget I know but worth it and very overlooked.
About 8mm thick, eta 2892 auto 80 hour power reserve. Nice bracelets, the crown can move the time so fast it's almost a great travellers watch.
Of course if you go vintage you could pick up something stunning for peanuts

My better half has just bought me a Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic for our upcoming wedding, excellent quality and fantastic value for money (at a discount especially).
Vintage iwc 89
Otherwise known as the poor mans patek.
The movement is the classic 89 manual wind that were used in RAF IWC mark xl before it was put in to civilian dress watches. According to monochrome-watches.com the movement is considered to be “one of the greatest movements ever produced”
They are all very nice, very nice indeed

Strap notwithstanding, I think the "white" Conquest is just gorgeous.
The Partito is very nice too -- and, I can thoroughly recommend Stowa (having two!).
I like these Certina Powermatics

Something bit different

I owned one and regret selling. Of course, it is a day-date so not a dress watch for purists. You can pick up for around £500 new on several sites.
Otherwise new I'd say like so many others, the Seiko Presage. Even more beautiful in the flesh.

Or as others have said, go vintage. Omega Seamasters make fantastic dress watches, with good unmolested examples available for around £500

Those old seamasters are lovely for circa £500 notes.
Thinking about it that may save me a few quid over a GS.
Given that I wear a dress watch so rarely, I plumped for this ...
Hard to beat for £400 : Thread here

Yes indeed. It’s a nice, simple (classic) design & Nicely made.
As posted it’s hard to beat for £400 I paid.
Quite a few others think similarly - see other comments on the thread here
