    PayPal vs BT

    Hi,

I’ve read the FAQ on PayPal but…

If you were selling an £5-10k watch, would you accept PayPal F & F? Is there protection for the buyer and can PayPal hold onto funds/return funds if a complaint is raised?

Friends and Family - being free to use............ Of course - carries no indemnity of any sort.

I’ve always paid using PayPal f&f via Amex for watches on here which was great for airmiles but had a phone call from Amex a few months ago telling me if I do it again they will cancel my card. Back to bank transfer now!

    Zero protection with F&F.

Crikey that’s a bit draconian from Amex.

I never realised that you could do that, I could have been a few thousand avios points up if I’d known

I'm far from an expert but that sounds like it could be taken by Amex as a form of laundering? i.e. you pay your partner via Paypal F&F with your Amex to gain the air miles, then they/you still have the full money + air miles.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong though on that.

I sometimes use my Mastercard to pay for things via Paypal but don't think I can use it for F&F transactions, only Goods & Services (i.e. buying from eBay or online shops who offer Paypal as an option).

Yes, as a buyer, no issues as a seller.

That is a signal that you are buying too many watches!

I closed both my PayPal and e-bay accounts earlier this year, don’t miss either. Debit card when buying off dealers, BT for private.

Except that under the 'friends and family' system it's not intended for buying or selling.

They're probably viewing it as taking cash advances without paying interest.

I was ripped off with someone who paid using F&F. They did a chargeback months later and I lost the money.

Unfortunately not true. Buyer can fund PayPal via credit card and later do a charge back, thus screwing the seller as they used friends and family, with no PayPal protection.

I wasn't aware of chargebacks via F&F either, so thanks for the heads-up!
