    Kickstarter of the week

This guy doesn't like homages or clones so he created this incredible watch all by himself with Russian parts for measly 350 Euros. Introducing the McManus Amphibia!

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ch/description

Please read the hilarious description of his watch; it's a masterpiece of creative writing. Here's some of my favorite quotes:
"Some of the best watches in the world such as; Blancpain, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, all have something in common, the original watchmakers name is on the dial. Personally I like this, as it means that watchmaker was proud of his work and signed it after."

"For 500 Euro I would be using a 2824-2 ETA or Sellita Swiss automatic movement. But the Russian 2416 31 jewel automatic movement I chose is as good, and it means I can offer the watch at 350 Euro not 500 Euro."

" I can tell you one thing, every detail of this watch has had serious thought given to it over the last 3 years of wearing my own one. Even the red McManus logo on the dial; it's the same Garamond font that Rolex use."

And here's the watch itself. Hmmm... looks a bit familiar....

I love this part, apparently the more jewels in a movement the better it is. So this cheap russian movement is equivalent to the Rolex 3135

"Here is a comparison of the 2416b movement with other popular automatic movements used in the 150-7000 Euro price tiers:

Omega Planet Ocean 39 jewels (Swiss made) 6500 Euro
Rolex Submariner 31 jewels (Swiss made) 7000 Euro
2416b: 31 jewels (Russian made) used in the McManus Amphibia
Sellita SW200: 26 jewels (Swiss made) 600-1000+ Euro tier
ETA 2824-2: 25 jewels (Swiss made) 400-600 Euro tier
Seiko NH35A: 24 jewels (Japan made) 250-350 Euro tier
Miyota 9015: 24 jewels (Japan made) 150-250 Euro tier
So as you can see above, the Russian made 31 jewel movement in the McManus Amphibia has more jewels than excellent ETA and Sellita Swiss movements fitted to more expensive watches. When it comes to automatic movements, the more jewels the better. You are getting the same number of 31 jewels as a Rolex Submariner."

McManus must have really wrestled with the design of this masterpiece.

I bet finding an appropriate name was like finding a needle in a Giant Haystack!

Great way to waste 300 Euros! (Spend the other 75 on a real Amphibia, if you like it).

PS Has he just readialled an off the shelf Amphibia? I couldn't be bothered to read all his BS...

Even though I'm called McManus I wouldn't wear that

That pitch reads like the its been transcribed directly from the words of a bloke who shows up in a pub to sell tat. The fact that he's halfway to his goal is further proof that there are more than enough idiots in the world.

I quite like the comment " I like quality 200m dive watches with quality movements. That's why this watch has a 31 jewel Russian automatic movement and not a Miyota or Seiko one."

Why do watches usually/often state how many jewels they have?

    Good grief.

It should be called the 'Grapple Time'..

Well he's made a right McAnus of that.

I wonder if he started a marketing course... and then promptly dropped out.

“So the McManus Amphibia watch is a one-off piece, or a start up project that disappears after 12 months.”

Come on give him credit for his honesty! (think he may have omitted a 'not'..)

I can't tell whether this is a joke or not. Surely if you were really trying to pass this off as your own watch you would at least change the name! One Google search for Amphibia and the game is up.

    Health and Safety alert!

This watch has serious heft, so wearing it daily may cause the kind of muscle imbalance typically seen in left-handed professional tennis players.

So it's an off-the-shelf Russian watch with a different dial and bezel, made in Ireland?

Why is this a better deal than others?

You get a choice of 3 bezel colours; black/green/red. The watch comes in a quality solid wood box. Personally I would hate to pay 350 Euro for a good watch, and it come in a cheap cardboard or plastic box. So I wouldn't expect someone else to pay the same for that.

Well I'm convinced after reading that.

Shockingly bad promo video, the lighting was the worst for showing off a watch and that music was an awful choice. That should have been enough to put me off carrying on, but I did anyway. Ten minutes of my life I'll never get back.
Just remind me, is this a "quality Russian movement" or a Seiko NH35 clone? He mustn't have mentioned it much.

Who makes the cases then? Are they literally just Vostock watches that he's coloured in??

I'm betting he has no way to pressure test to 200m after doing his modding on the watch.

Has a cheek to call himself a watchmaker but never do a repair if a watch is returned, he is just simply going to replace it with a brand new one. I guess if you give him 350 euro he can afford to replace it a few times and still stay in profit.
