Thread: New way to check Broadband Speed

  1. #1

New way to check Broadband Speed

New simple way to check your broadband speed:

    https://fast.com

Mine? 2.8Mbps. I live about half a mile outside an urban area. Am impatiently awaiting the Government to fulfil it's promise to rollout superfast broadband to more areas (reiterated in the Queen's speech today).

    Excellent.
That's why I love Virgin Mega Super Dooper XXXXL light speed broadband. I pay for 100 meg and I've just registered 440 Kbps .

Just to clarify something, it's 8 Mbps (Megabits per second) to 1 MBps (MegaByte per second). The BT sales lady promised me I'd get 80MBps download and 20MBps upload, as did the engineer setting up my new Superfast Infinity. Curiously enough I'm getting around 5MBps download and 1.6MBps upload, so I think they were both wrong.

Some of these speeds are reminding me of a "Top Tip" in this months Viz: "Pretend you've got BT Broadband by drawing a buffering symbol over the centre pages of Razzle".

Just tried it and 5.6 Mbps on BT infinity, that is pretty poor and not what I was told when signing up

26 MBs for me. Should be 37 according to talk talk.  Seems fast enough for what I use it for.

Just re-checked tonight and it's 37.... happy with that

They will have used the key words of "up to" while saying that.

We went to BT recently and the speeds are shocking. It's gone up since I complained which I'm not sure is a coincidence or not!

But when I first raised the issue, BT said that in my contract the minimum speed they can deliver is 512kbps and as I was achieving a massive 650kbps it wasn't an issue. I'm not pretty steady on 6mbps which is enough for our houses usage I guess. Would upgrade to infinity but don't want to pay £49 activation fee!

    75 for me

We do have fibre at my office so to be expected.

As you're in Dorset you're lucky to even have broadband. Whenever I had to go there to visit clients I rarely found that I had a mobile phone signal. Used to see lots of hand-made posters about upcoming witch burnings though.

Ha! I'm in Dorset now and have fine mobile signal and 6.6Mb/s on non Infinity BT broadband so not too terrible!

My wife and I have been with EE Fibre Broadband for around a year now - speeds are fine at around 35mbps

Having a morning routine of rebooting the router when the connection drops isn't fun though.

Is this supposed to be better than Speedtest (for example) in some way?

I get 120MB/s on Fast and 147 on Speedtest (My wifi constrains the 200Mb/s internet connection).

Just checked our speed. 1.9mbps. Thank you BT for making me use my 4G Connex from my mobile.

This is why we write to Patterson and his Newcastle based team to complain. A new build area and BT will get to us - eventually but we're not on their list to progress quickly. And the new build area is getting 130 new houses.

    BT = Bloody Terrible!!

  39. #39
    13. Nowhere near what I was promised or signed up to when I took out the contract with my ISP. I will try again from home and see if I have reason to moan to both BT and EE although, to be honest, it is bloody difficult to know who is responsible for what.

JFTR, this specifically tests your download speed from Netflix servers.

Unlike other speed tests out there, it doesn't test anything else. Upload and ping time are also important for general browsing, Skype and gaming even more so. However, knowing your Netflix download speed is in itself a useful figure to know. It just might not be the same as your speed connecting to other servers.

How the hell did they buy that domain name in 2016???

8.6 for me. Not too bad in a little rural village. Although my pal up the road gets 40 odd with the same BT Infinity. Not cool.
