Houses- what does £550,000 get you locally ?

Given the geographical spread of TZ Members and inspired by another thread.

I thought it would be interesting to see what £550,000 will get you in terms of houses /flats.

This one is about 20 miles from where I live with spectaular views across the firth of Clyde, Arran and Argyll ( I imagine £550,000 will be in the upper 5% of house prices in my LA area).

Only two rules, the house should be local to your current location and £550,000 or less.

Gets you a small (112 sq m) but modern 3 bed semi with a little garden in my part Hampshire. You are in starter home/first time buyer territory at that price:

I know housing is cheaper in Scotland but isn't that also priced to account for the risk of it falling into the sea in the next few decades?

That coastline does not suffer from erosion. Not a bad deal if the new build in the grounds was worth constructing. However, my days of heating old houses is gone!

Not necessarily the largest in my area for the money, but I like this quirky house http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-...-47777148.html

Believe it or not my mother in law lives in the house next to that one. It's just her living in it now so the plan is to sell it and buy one of the flats along the road either in Kilmorey Gardens or one of the new ones on the front of Gourock on the old Stakis site.

Not wishing to brag but the topic and timing seems appropriate or draw direct comparisons since the economic conditions and some other factors are not really comparable, but a week ago the good lady and I bought a 225 sq m, 4 bed, 2 bathroom, village property for about 150,000 pounds.
Built to a much higher than normal Spanish standard, for the wife of a local Construction Business owner. No persistent damp here and it has a modern central heating system throughout. It occupies 1500 sq m of land including various citrus trees, terraces,an outside kitchen housed in it's own separate building and plenty of room to add a pool and a pool table in the fully tiled garage

20 minutes from Cartagena, 10 minutes closer to school and 10 or 20 minutes to the coast dependening on which beach.
I'm a happy chap to say the least.

This in my town in Malta: https://franksalt.com.mt/properties/031614

And this in my part of London: https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/de...EPxmxkOFz8v.97

And this near my IoM flat: http://www.cowleygroves.com/property...uglas-im2-4el/

    Makes an interesting comparison.

Not a lot is the answer, central Oxford is mad, and may well still be one of the most expensive place to live as a function of average income. The average property costs 14 times the average income!

It is still v v popular though, lots of London relocations, old money, overseas investors all result in the key workers being priced out. One of the main problems in retention of staff in the NHS is that none of them can afford to live here

I put the amount into the ESPC and of the suggestions, this was my favourite.

I'm very familiar with Clarence Street, as it was down here myself and some school chums used to escape to the pubs of St. Stephen St.
The School uniform never seemed to bother the barman. :)

Here's the closest one to me that fits the price http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-...-65606699.html

A lovely one bedroom, 689sq ft, but at least the garden is a decent size.

Can't wait to get back to Scotland when looking at some of those others!

This one went for £450,000. Property is expensive in Lerwick compared to the rest of Shetland.

    http://www.estateagencyshetland.co.u...midgarth-house

Or a tenth of that £45,000 for a one bed place on Unst with the sea "on the doorstep"

This is up the road. If you want a decent 4 bed detached, you need to double that.

Me too. That's the only way I could afford one. Ann St. Would be my first choice but half a million would only get you the garden shed.
