£550k doesn’t get you much round here, and it’s relatively cheap here by London standards:

Ahem, very little by the standards of the thread thus far! Only consolation it is more than you could get for the money now than 6 months ago.

Pretty much closest to me for that money at present. A whole 525 sq ft:

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-...-70758680.html

Maybe I should move but I guess there are other advantages of living here!

NB there are no houses at £550k...

£550k doesn't get much in Notting Hill, For that you would struggle to find a 1bedroom that you'd like. The one above is about a 30 second walk from me.

This is around the corner from me
Rather surprised as £550k is normally small 2 bed flat territory.

Nice 2 bed flat in Cheltenham

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-...-50229786.html

Or a 4 bed town house closer to the town centre

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-...-64417595.html

Or just round the corner, next door to some fun friends of ours (so I'd never consider it for the sake of my liver)

Imprssive rooms, albeit they don't detail the 'lower' floor in photos.

Ashby a nice town with its own infrastructure.

I know it doesn't quite meet the brief, but I'm disappointed that I didn't buy this flat in a converted church in Scarborough.

This a couple of villages over from me. A fairly typical thatched cottage which seems to fall mid range from the scottish/welsh/NI mansions and the London shoeboxes.

Nice to see an architectural nod to original sin in an ecclesiastical building.

    not much in Winchester SO21

If you are a "first time" buyer it must be impossible - and if you want to live in Winchester and commute to London for work you need to earn maybe £8k gross, maybe more, for the season ticket

It’s quite a shame that so much of the country is off limits for so many due to house prices.

I agree - but there does not seem to be a solution

all this "affordable housing" hype will only help a small number ............ if you are just a normal young couple born in the South, South East and want to stay in the area it must be very difficult to buy a house of your own.

Large choice of 4 bedroom detached properties in most parts of Hampshire for £550,000.

You can buy 2 houses in a Riga city center for a half a mil :)

Or one of these in a beach resort near river.

Its even worse for single people.

I moved from what was really an over-sized sized rented shed in the country, outside Horsham, West Sussex, as I was never going to be able to buy a property there, to Shetland, with a small, by the standards of this forum, wodge of cash, and hope in my heart. The cheapest house when I arrived was a tumbledown croft at £7,000. Most properties were £25,000 plus, but as it is an "offers over" system a minimum of 10% over, but I saw up to 40% over, was being offered on the houses. I struggled to get a job at first and the wodge of cash was dwindling. So I have ended up in rented accommodation, albeit only paying £250 a month for a one bed house. Housing is expensive here due to the oil industry, speculators, 2nd home owners, and AirBnB type renting. I have ended up £250 per month better off than I was in Sussex with a far better quality of life, even if the weather can be fairly awful. I have also reduced my work to 4 days a week and take a month off unpaid every summer with a couple of weeks of paid leave tacked onto that. Traffic jams = nil, crime = almost nil, cost and time of getting back to mainland UK = costly, weather = always windy.

This property is in the next village, it's typical of some of the fine properties around the Ormskirk/Parbold/Standish area

Think I may have actually dropped kids at a party at this house - probably needs a bit of modernizing.
