Think I may have actually dropped kids at a party at this house - probably needs a bit of modernizing.
I need to have a serious word with myself regarding life choices!

A short walk from me but this is overpriced and will not sell quickly (I have reasonable grasp of the local market) and is too far away from the transport links and 'triangle' where all the nik-naks for dickheads shops and artisan chocolatiers are.
Still way cheaper than neighbouring Dulwich but more expensive than Anerly and it's insalubrious neighbour Croydon.

£550,00 here will get you a new build 2 bedroom flat in the City Centre.
    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-...-69479855.html

Or a 70's 5 bed detached family house in the suburbs and outer villages.

Doesn't "offers over £550k" mean it it will probably cost £700k?

People who didn’t want to pay the landlord's mortgage for the same property?

Not too far from me. Needs complete renovation (which in this area gets you almost no price adjustment) and is "offers over" so make of that what you will.

No, generally it'll mean they want 550, rather than people offering around £525k.

My sister had a viewing at the weekend on a similar house on the same street. She sent me the link and asked for my thoughts. I replied with 'it's definitely a contender for Ugly House to Lovely House with George Clarke'. She didn't offer on it.

Fair point, it's just hard for me to get my head around it when a similar style flat can be had around here for less than £100k, good old London Town!

In England, yes. In Scotland it's traditionally meant something slightly different.

My first house was in Littleborough, cost me £20k in 1987!

As a child we lived on a farm at Blackshaw Head and looked straight out at Stoodley Pike across the valley (Happy Valley for anyone that watched it).

    Small world.

In England, in a burgeoning market - it means just that, I think. (poss offers of £575 to take off market perhaps)

In Scotland the amount in excess of the asking price - will depend upon the market also. At least in Scotland - if you register an interest, you will be informed of a "closing date" so can submit a bid if you wish.

That’s close, I had a house on Berkeley Walk and worked for Fothergill & Harvey.

I’ve a good friend still lives up there, on Blackstone Edge Road.

Short answer: a frickin' castle! Average wage up here is £22k (need to double check that) but some areas of Bolton (Heaton, lostock etc) are really upmarket.

I'll fire some pictures on later. There are some beautiful houses in that price range though, from modern builds to converted farms.

People spend a lot more then £550k in central London for 1bedrooms. We pay for the location( convenience to work and socially )& postcode

Those that are smart save & will buy as soon as they can. So many Londoners rent well into their 30/40s, if your single it's twice as hard.

That's not bad at all when you consider the link I posted is a two bed flat in Newcastle.

I think I’d get depression if I had to live in a 1bedroom studio flat. It’d be even worse if I had to pay through the nose for it.

I guess some people just can’t see past Londonistan.

The flat may be the same but the wages, entertainment, amenities and weather are not, if Newcastle offered what London has and businesses plus 9 million people wanted to locate themselves there then property would be equally in demand and expensive.

    Utter tosh.

Londoners are robbed blind at every turn for everything.

Keep up at the back, the discussion is about property prices.

Ah sorry, I though it was about the price of a stottie and being robbed every time you leave the house, my mistake.

You failed to get the point of the discussion in the first place and tried to justify why 'big fancy London' is worth getting ripped of in.

Before you ask, I do visit regularly for extended periods and I see it first hand.

    ? I don't have to justify anything? Do I?
I'm just struggling to see how I'm being "robbed blind at every turn for everything" ?? As you put it.

The thread is about house prices, some people have commented on why prices may be higher in some areas compared to others.

I was surprised that a 2 bed flat even in the best bit of Newcastle was £550k. Then I read your link and say it is 1800 sq ft and has a "formal dining room" so more like a 3 bed house size then!

Same around here, you might get a postage stamp of a garden thrown in if it was on the ground floor, but that might be an extra £50k.

Let’s be honest, at o/o 540 that’ll go north of £600k. Old guy lives in it at present, set it in fire a few years ago IIRC
