Although not old enough to remember him in any programs, I certainly remember him from adverts in, er, certain publications I used to peruse in my early teens.

It's amazing how iconic and integral his moustache was. He was almost unrecognizable without it:

    Hail Klytus !

Remember reading about him one time and being surprised at how little was known for sure about his early life, (he said himself that he didn't know how old he was)

I can remember watching Department S, such a cool guy.
I remember my mother and her sisters were watching one day and agreeing that they "wouldn't mind having his slippers under the bed."
    Toe curling stuff.

I remember him for his folded back shirt cuffs and the elongated and pointy shirt collars. Style icon!

I have good memories of Department S and the spin-off Jason King. Born in 1926 apparently.

Loved his style in Dept S and Jason King, a very proficient actor in all sorts of stuff.

    Will be sadly missed.

    RIP.

    Cheers,
    Neil.

Appeared in a very good 1960 film called "The siege of Sydney street" which was rather gritty and very unlike the stylised, affected and lightweight stuff he'd become famous for a decade later.

I think all the Moms and Sisters would have been sorely disappointed.

    Sorry to hear this news.
    Department S is remembered fondly.
I suspect he was a better actor than maybe he was allowed to be after the TV exposure as Jason King.
Actually,I confess that I like Tabac-one of two fragrances I can recall being complimented upon for wearing - sadly,by another man.
    RIP.

Sad to see he's gone, but a good innings by any measure. The Jason King era was full of series with dashing macho types, great fun.

We actually had neighbours at the time who admitted naming their son Jason after him! Seems there were a lot of Jasons born in that era, wonder what they think now?

When my grandparents lived in London he was their neighbour and a struggling young actor at the time. Always stealing the milk off the doorsteps on the way home after a night out. My Gran fed him many a time and my Dad said he was great fun with brilliant looking girlfriends, and the odd male friend from time to time. A few tales always to be had, and he was caught for indecency at the local park toilets. Used to take my Dad out for a spin in his latest car, before they all mysteriously vanished. A style legend with flair...

Yes, his career took a dip when he got caught with that lorry driver/crane driver - whatever.

I met him back in the late 70s at a celeb party when I was into that scene - seemed OK to me.
Camp as hell but good fun.
The lady that I was with didn't get on with him but I guess that was because he took some of her limelight at the parties.

in the day when I was at school, he drove a black Lotus Europa on the TV and we thought he was the coolest guy with that car and his leather suits. Heard him described in that role as a 'louche crimefighter and womaniser' - something we would prob. all aspire to
