    Jerusalem

The wife has commanded me to arrange a trip to Jerusalem and the Holy Lands. I shall therefore obey.

    Does anyone know

    a) the best time to go for the weather /crowds

    b) where to go or is it just the city of Jerusalem

    c) where to avoid

    d) how long we will need out there.

Time is not a restriction, so we can more or less go anywhere anytime.

    Many thanks

    Mick

I had a great time in December 2007. Even picked up a signed banksy at his Santa's Ghetto exhibition on Manger Sq in Bethlehem

Lots of places to see in the west Bank. To do it properly you'll probably need two day but can see a lot in one day too. Jerusalem is lovely. The old city is just magical. Best felafel in Jerusalem is on the right as you enter the old city through Damascus gate

    Have fun

Seriously it very much depends on one's motivation.

" Manger Sq" might give a clue.

    ""And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: "

But as I say, it depends on one's motivation .

One option is to stay at a resort and do excursions from there, a few years ago we stayed at Elait and did Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Dead Sea, Jordan, Petra, Wadi Rum, Tel Aviv and more using it as R&R base.

Another advocate here for turning it into a wider trip than just Jarusalem. The sea of Galilea is lovely and there are loads of other things to do. I did a Kibbutz for the summer of 1998 and absolutely loved it although the political climate has changed somewhat since then.

Weather-wise, avoid the summer if you can. It is searingly hot, up to 50 degrees, and unless you like it that hot it takes some acclimatisation. If I were going it would be either April or October.

As others have said, the city itself is absolutely stunning and rivalled by none in terms of the amount of history you can cram into one tiny place. The only place that comes close is Istanbul... and it's not even that close.
