Thread: Car "toys"

    Car "toys"

With virtually every new model the list of toys now added to cars is rather impressive, many years ago the simple reversing camera was seen as the latest must have but it appears to be almost standard on even the more basic models nowadays.
Never thought I'd say this but once you've had keyless entry and the auto tailgate where it lifts up for you if you have the keys in your pocket it's a right pain when you get in to a car that doesn't have it.
For me the auto tailgate lift is my favourite toy......what's yours?

I can’t recommend a heated steering wheel highly enough.

Dynamic/active headlights, these were amazing on my M5. When we lived in deep dark and wet Scotland there wasn't a day in the colder months when I didn't marvel at their effectiveness.

I know is very old hat now, but simple remote central locking that we take for granted has to be up there with the nicest features.
I’m ashamed to say it, but driving a car without parking sensors is quite disconcerting now!
One feature I don’t like is electronic hand brakes, would much rather have mechanical control over that, but I suspect that’s my inner boy racer hanging on, pretty soon there will be whole generations of drivers that will not know the joy of the handbrake turn.

I too have been enjoying and approving of this feature recently on my new Touareg.

I also like the clever “birds eye view” that the surround cameras give of the car when you are manoeuvring in tight spaces. It’s as if the picture is being relayed from a drone hovering about fifteen above the car. Clever.

I am impressed with my new flashing indicators; much more noticeable than the semaphore arms.

On my Mustang it has to be line lock......the ability to lock the front wheels, and light up the rears in a cloud of smoke at the push of a button is hilarious...

The fact that ford signed off on it gives me hope for the future..

My Series II Landrover had keyless entry. The auto tailgate only operated in the downward direction though.

I think the keyless locking thing is a gadget too far, but 'conventional' remote central locking is something I don`t like being without. When I run my MGB I find it a pain to lock the doors and boot manually with the tiny keys that everyone used in the 60s.

Some things I really don`t like, such as windscreen washers that automatically run the wipers too.

Electric handbrakes on manual cars are weird too, I really don't like them .....but having said that I doubt I`ll ever go back to driving a manual car, I`m a total convert to autos (apart from classics).

For the past 10 years I have only bought cars with heated seats.

    The hotter the better.

They are my favourite car gadget.

Agreed - in a hire car at the moment that doesn't and don't like parking an unfamiliar sized car in unfamiliar spaces and having to use my own senses ;)

Drove a new shape Nissan the other day with the Birdseye camera on it and it was great, very useful.

Keyless entry and start, heated seats, dynamic cruise control, auto wipers (manual speeds are a ball ache) and memorybseats are all a must for me.

A hot velour car seat (especially the passenger side) is an ideal motoring accessory for the more mature gent.

  25. #25
    A few of my favourites...

    Heated seats & steering wheel
Auto dipping side mirror (when selecting reverse)
    Auto dimming rear view mirrors
    Refrigerated glove box
    Intelligent LED lights
    Tyre pressure monitors
    Adaptive cruise control

    Would quite happily delete:

    Keyless entry
    Auto wipers
The damn thing that jams my brakes on when it thinks I’m about to hit the hedge I park up to
    Electronic hand brakes

Never been that cold in a car that I've felt need for heated seat/steering wheel. If it's cold outside I wear a coat.

When I first started driving it was considered cool to have electric Windows and central locking , fast forward to now and the adaptive headlights on my rs4 a few years ago to be fascinating as you really did see the beam pattern move . Now I seem to not be without a heated seat ( leather ) and still love my auto dimming headlights and auto wipers etc and that just on the works van . The non techie big thing I've always had to have is a heated front screen if possible

But what about your backside man?

Have you never had extreme frostbite in your buttocks so bad they are in danger of falling off?

No, neither have I, but a toasty bot on a freezing morning is a genuine pleasure. Especially if you have been married a good few years like I have.

Mine has wine in the back (or is it whine?)! Diff or a wheel bearing probably! A heater is good in this weather. My old Ford Pop had a couple of flaps that you could open, next to the engine for the cold weather and those vacuum wipers that slowed down to a crawl when you went uphill. Toys! You young 'uns don't know how lucky you are. Padded seats - Luxury!

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t’ mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt.

Anything that distracts the driver's eyes from the road is to be avoided. Satnav is the prime example.

I'd like: Engines that start when you turn the key, not 2 seconds later once you've had the message come up "engine starting". No I don't want to be depressing the clutch first I thank you so very much. Central locking that opens the doors when you actually press the button, not 2 seconds later. Parktronic that tells you that you're about to hit the wall, not 2 seconds delay. Manual windows. A keyhole to put the ignition key in, not keyless go so you have to find somewhere to lodge the key, & then forget where the hell it is. In fact, anything that doesn't come on the INSTANT you press the switch.

I love my 62 year old Morris Minor which has no electronics other than its 2 fuses & does as its told not the other way around.

    Rant over.

Head up display and top view camera are the gadgets on my car that I miss the most when driving another. In particular I find it really unnerving now having to take my eyes off the road to look down at the dash to see my speed or across to the screen for the sat-nav in other cars, rather than having all the info I need right in my field of vision!

Well you need to press the button on the remote on an X5 to open the doors so you have to have it in your hand to do that. If only there was a hole to then put the key in & turn it without having to put the key somewhere forgettable, press the start button, press the handbrake off button. Oh no, you have to select the gear first (i think). Can't get used to it, I'd prefer putting the clutch in & moving the gear lever, then let the (manual) handbrake off. Every time I get into the (wife's) car I'm wondering what the hell I've got to do next to make it go :-/

I aspire to having a heated windscreen in my next car, now we live in a rural west coast Scotland. Just get fed up cleaning the windscreen in the morning for weeks on end.
