Things to do round Mayfair when picking up a watch.....

    Peeps,

After many months of anticipation I am picking up my new MBIII limited edition (to commemorate the Tornado going out of service in 2019) at the Bremont Mayfair boutique on Tuesday afternoon. Meeting friends in the evening - Gordons Winebar, Champagne Charlies and the Ship and Shovel, but in the afternoon is there anything near the Bremont boutique worth having a look round? Maybe a bit of Christmas shopping? Its not an area I know well.... many thanks

Mate, you are just down the road from some excellent watch porn on Bond Street. Head down Mount Street, through Berkely Square into New/Old Bond Street and just enjoy the watches. Head to Burlington Arcade and Royal Arcade which are also just off Old Bond Street. At this time of the year with all the lights and snow, it would look magical no doubt.

If you're a photographer, maybe consider visiting Leica Mayfair in Bruton Place near Berkley Square where there is also a Leica cafeteria.

There may be previews of sales you can visit: Bonhams has a watch sale on Wednesday, as well as some Fine Clocks (https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/24235/), and viewings are taking place today and tomorrow.

I'm just catching up with this .... the thought of the Mrs 'fizzing at the bunghole' is nearly enough to make me part with £19.95 for aftershave I've never smelt or heard of before :)

    Is it that good??

I’m pretty certain that is not where you are supposed to apply it. But I’d imagine it would smart more than fizz if you did.

One of my favourite parts of town - as well as Mount Street a simple walk up New Bond Street will let you see plenty of watch shops, the Belstaff Store etc. etc.

If you are in Mount Street maybe have a drink at the Connaught or a bite to eat at the Mount Street Deli.

If you are up the top nearer Oxford Street Christophers Place has lots of good places to eat and can recomend the breakfast at Sofra (get off at Bond Street Tube). Selfridges will be rammed but good for any Christmas Shopping.

    Enjoy !

There's a Parmigiani boutique around the corner from Bremont. I'd then take a walk down New & Old Bond St, do a couple of dog legs to take in The Watch Club/GJ Cleverleys and the Burlington Arcade and then take a walk down Jermyn St (again with some meandering to take in Piccadilly and Princes Arcade). If you haven't got a club then you could try a bar snack in Wiltons and finish up licking the windows at Austin Kaye in the Strand before your evening engagements. Taylors of Bond Street cut very nicely but I would only use them if George the Barber in Bedfordbury is on holiday.

    Bring plenty of money.

Depends what you want to do. I go round all the galleries and a few shops.

For watches as they’ve said it’s Burlington Arcade, Bond St, Regent St (for the big WoS) and Selfridges. There’s also a place that has some bits in Piccadilly Arcade. William and Sons has some unusual high end pieces too.

Good places to lunch at in the area depending on what you want as well

....and if you want an a la carte breakfast try Richoux just outside the Burlington arcade- a fantastic set up for the day ahead!

Why not go the whole hog and do Madame Tussaud's and then stare at an out of work actor painted silver and standing very still.

I am also on one of my rare forays up to the area tomorrow, trains permitting. I am planning on a visit to the Royal Academy on Picadilly which has the Dali/Duchamp exhibition on. Looking forward to that.

I went to the Bonhams Exhibition of the Lord Harris Collection last night (as well as the Watch and Fine Clocks Auction viewing). Well worth a visit - the Lord Harris Collection (from Belmont) is absolutely wonderful.

The Fifth Lord Harris was an avid collector of all things horological and the exhibition includes everything from Knibb and Tompion, through Breguet and Antide Janvier. There's even a Junghans Astro Chron. It runs until Saturday at Bonhams on Bond Street.

Grays Antique Market is always worth a look, if you don't mind heading up to the other end of Bond Street.

    That's a good call.
I love Mayfair, and always have a trip up Burlington Arcade to check out the watches and other shiny things.

Without fail cross over the road to Jermyn Street which is full of gents outfitters. Nod to the statue of Beau Brummell who is attributed as inventing what has evolved into the modern day suit and used to advocate polishing ones boots in champagne for the best shine. New and Lingwood is a favourite place of mine for socks and shirts and ties, Turnbull and Asser again for shirts and pocket squares. Lovely cheese shop and of course Geo F Trumpers / Truefit & Hill and D.R.Haris for after shave and shaving soap. At the end of the street is J Fox cigar merchant which is fun also.

Round the corner to St James St and Berry Bros & Rudd is an excellent stop for stocking up on wine and on your way down be sure to drool in the window of John Lobb shoes and Lock & Co Hatters.

just a 5 - 10 minute walk up to Berkley Square where there is Bentley, Rolls Royce and Bugatti showrooms to window shop. Few nice pubs near by also for a quick livener.

I am sure you will have fun.

Apologies for the delay in responding.... getting ready for Christmas!!!!

I had an amazing afternoon with a very pleasant hour spent in the Bremont Boutique itself picking up my watch. A snack was taken the Mount Street Deli and the remainder of the time spent walking around and taking in many of the things mentioned in the tips, at least from the outside.

Having never been to this part of Mayfair before I must admit to finding the Burlington and Royal Arcades (and the surrounding area) a bit surreal - an alternate reality if you like with very little to remind you of the real world. Fascinating to browse both the shops and the people but I felt a bit detached - my old adage of "if you have to ask the price you can't afford it" echoing in my mind.

But a great afternoon nonetheless, fully recommended might go back in January as Bremont are having a presentation from one of their "ambassadors".

The evening with friends in The Ship and Shovel, Gordons Winebar and Champagne Charlies was messy, almost causing one of my friends to have an epic parent fail at her little girls nativity play the next day, but thats a different story.

    Merry Christmas!!!

Had to look Heaven up!!! But it looks cool - I used to do Camden "back in the day" so I like the club history around now. However, I would have missed my last train to Farnham and never made work the next day!!! Far more planning required if clubs are involved these days I'm afraid......
