    Why No Clocks on TZ?

Why do we never see any clocks on here, even in Sales Corner?

Just wondered really, maybe there is a rule that we don’t get involved with clocks at all, but I’ve been here a while and never seen anything for or against.

It’s just that watches and clocks probably attract the same sort of person, well they do in my case.

Even repair might, in some ways and with some clocks be easier than a watch and, in my ignorance, be a great way to get into amateur watch repair??

    Just a thought..

I can remember some very nice JLC Atmos clocks being discussed. It led me to buying one for myself a few years ago. TZUK is definitely not a 'clock' free zone (we should be grateful for that at least).

Smiths Radio Room 8 day winder at back of pic:

Astral (trading name of Smiths) Radio Room Junghans Quartz:

And finally a modern radio controlled Quartz RAF Outgoing Sector Clock. Got that for my birthday this year, originals with RAF Provence can be £6k plus and are highly desired. The sticker has been removed:

Small brass Swiza 8 day carriage clock - pretty solid and heavy.

Smiths wall clock with a 7 day movement. It's not a brilliant photo but the glass window at the bottom displays the pendulum

Here are a couple of nixie clocks. I've recently upgraded the tubes from ИН-12 to ZM 1100 (which have more nicely formed numbers) on the smaller one.

One of mine, a recased IBM clocking-in clock. I suspect the recasing was done using components of the original, judging by some photos of complete IBM time recorders of the same period.

Really like these two. Missed out on getting a Smiths a couple of times off a few ships I worked on that where going for scrap. I'd really love to get my hands on one.

Thinking about it a bit, other than both telling the time, watches and clocks don't have much in common?

    Why No Clocks on TZ?

I've got a Nixie kit on the Christmas list thanks to the Forum. Mind you I did last year
    as well.

    Do travel clocks count?

I found out quite a bit about this old one.

Time for me to get my balls out again then for you all..... I really must video this some time. Its great to watch at the change from 12:59 to 1 as every single ball bearing cascades in orderly fashion.

Much of the technology is pretty similar.

Yes, but most of the discussion isn't on the technology and I suspect most of us aren't watch/clock makers

A shame IMO, I find some of those posts more interesting than the endless buying/enabling/dealer/residuals etc. threads.

Absolutely. I love clocks also (they are horological after all). Same function, similar technology and interesting history and design.

I always enjoy when there are posts about interesting clocks (I suspect many of us feel the same). Would be great to see more.

When I find a spare moment I’ll post a few pictures of my longcase.

Clocks are brilliant, they impress on you a sense of calm and continuity.

My long case clock bought as a box of bits at auction by my late father sometime in the late sixties. Still keeps good time but in real need of servicing/restoration.

Another clock, this one a JLC Atmos posted at [url] http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171013/779cae08bd0bb6d3402d706a5db1360c.jpg[url]

A Gorgy Timing clock photographed in a municipal building in Grenoble.

It's hard to be interested in horology and *not* be drawn into pocket watches, clocks and even sundials.

I'm a very minor #clocknerd, but should, at some point, very much like to own a decent Huguenot long case, and perhaps a striking mantle clock made by a good name. And perhaps a really good marine chronometer. And maybe something modern and interesting. And an atomic clock.

Sigh. It's likely to be a slippery slope. Probably.

I found these at Davidstow museum today including that splendid old sector clock.

Any info on the 1980s Seikos which where being sold working for £50 each?

I was told they where old station clocks but I’ve no idea.

The first one with the wings is impressive! I do always find it a bit depressing that most wall clocks seem to be powered by the same cheap alarm clock in the middle. Maybe it doesn't matter though.

Those Seikos where metal and heavy with a swing open back,I think they had been converted to battery.

Obviously not a clock but I was sure you would find it of interest.

It’s a NOS mechanical thermometer in original packaging from the former GDR.

I love everything about it the utilitarian design, the basic packaging, to me it evokes an era.

If just put it up in my living room,I think it looks good.

You can get them [or could] with Fahrenheit as the main measurement for the USA etc.

Every watch enthusiast should consider adding an Atmos clock to their collection. Wonderfull things they are.

For quite a while I've had a local NTP server, Chronos, using a Raspberry PI and a Trimble Resolution-T GPS timing receiver. I finally got around to adding a time display and mounting it to the wall in my office/studio so that I have a wall clock. Adding the display created more electrical noise, so it is now only good to +/- 750ns. Not exactly beautiful, but ....

    Best wishes,
    Bob

That is seriously cool. Does it have an alarm? :)

    Best wishes,
    Bob

It has an alarm. Most cool element is the red, green, yellow sound metre in the guitar frets/neck. There is a mic in the Jack socket and the volume control adjusts the sensitivity. The Nixie bulbs are beautiful too. Mark at Bad Dog Designs is a genius.
