    First snow of the season!

Big snowflakes, no wind. It just started snowing. The park next to my house is slowly turning white. It's been a while since the last snowfall: last year we didn't get anything. The forecast is that it will continue snowing until late this evening. I am off to a Jaguar Owners Club meeting tomorrow, 60 mls north. We're taking the Japanese 4x4 with rain & snow tyres, just to be sure.

Lets start preparing for the inevitable sight of people suddenly losing the ability to drive their cars at the first sight of snow!!

A vile sight that fills me with dread.

Hopefully we won't get any snow down here.
    Cheers,

My 14 year old RWD Maserati has a snow and ice transmission button that I've never tried...yet.

Will I be able to reproduce that ad with the Audi R8 driving on the snow?

I've been waiting 3 years for snow to finally test out my winter tyres and snow gearbox mode!

My old Jaguar XJS had one. All it did was knock out first gear I seem to remember.

I've got one of those too - car and button.

I think I will be leaving it in the garage and using the Touareg instead...

Perhaps the scariest drive I ever had was years back in the Jaguar S-Type R I had at the time. The snow came down without warning, and the car quickly became completely uncontrollable. I was on a steep hill in traffic and everyone just started skidding and sliding. Makes me go cold just remembering it.

Somehow I made it home at about 1mph - it took hours and quite how I managed it without a scratch on the car I still don't know. Sadly, when the snow thawed we had floods, and I wrote the car off in a deep one.
So clever my foot fell off.

Winter tyres, advanced 4 wheel drive, 15 more years of development, rally heritage, a competent driver...

vs my Maserati which has in its favour a fetching shade of blue that looks good against the snow, a particularly stylish interior, a first generation Ferrari electromechanical clutch with software from 2002 and a driver who is game for a laugh depending on how life is treating him at the moment.

A lot of the problems lie with the driver and not the tyres!

A few flakes settled when we woke up this morning...

Our Jeep is decidedly more wintry than the above Wrangler, and looked chilly at 9am!

Had a quick walk on Dartmoor, snow made the dogs go crazy as usual!

    And now defrosting!

A brief flurry here this morning which came to nothing.

Every now and then we get the heavy stuff. (Twyford, Berkshire)

This was my driveway in 2009

Hoping for snow here, I love it, goes back to my childhood I suppose; (long story), If it does snow, we have our trusty LR Freelander 2, to get us to Tesco's for supplies.

I downsized this year getting rid of my 3 year old D4 and replacing it with a 5 series Touring, now tonight and tomorrow we are in for significant disruptive snowfall in the West Midlands. Bloody marvellous no snow in five years.

Snow here yesterday in North Wales meant an aborted journey to work. Plenty of abandoned cars and people spinning wheels going nowhere which means the roads were blocked and a council gritting lorry in a ditch. Thankfully I fitted CrossClimates last month so safely returned home to await the next downfall on Sunday.

    Cheers
    Neil

    First snow of the season!

We had some here in the South Wales Valleys last night. I was out in work at the time in Bridgend were there was barely a flurry but talking to my wife on the phone, there were vehicles failing to get up the hill past our house.
Thanks to my winter tyres recently purchased off Ian (Barton Red) I got home without so much as a wheel spin.

My Nissan Leaf is suffering poor battery efficiency. Not sure that the high torque will cope well in the snow either when it comes.

    No snow here.

Just as well, I don't want to have to get a car out of the garage just to show it covered in the white stuff and burble on about winter tyres, snow gearboxes etc.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

    Interesting.

I never gave it a thought about battery efficiency in cold temperatures.

Yes efficiency down a big chunk like 20-30% and I had to plug in at my folks which I have never had to do normally.

I’m in New York at the moment and it’s been proper snowing all day.

Not really settling though so I may be back at work on time despite all of my planning ;)

Best place for snow is on Christmas cards, I really hate the bloody stuff with a vengence! Had a couple of nasty falls on snow and ice as a kid and it put me off for life, got knocked out cold on the first one and split my head open on the second......still got a scar and bald patch to remind me! I used to run miles in snow and ice but I never liked it.

My Jag XF is like a pig on a skateboard in snow, fortunately I don’t need to drive when the weather’s bad but if I did I’d own a different car.

Surprised to see this amount of snow this morning considering it was clear at 4am.
This is as much as we've had in Wilts for a few years now.

No snow here unfortunately. I suppose it stops any mad panic buying in the supermarkets though. Snow turns people crazy.
