Thread: Has 2017 Been A 'Flipping' Good Year For You?

  1. #51
I don't think I could cope with speed of the ins and outs there Ken! I thought I was bad at 18 in and 13 out (so far) but only 3 of them were in and out in the same year. There's still a few weeks left yet of this year to try to at least reach parity!

My 2017 (actually December to December) looks like:

    IN
    Rolex Datejust 1601 YG 1964
    Seiko SARB017 Alpinist
    JLC Memovox Reveil
    Seagull ST19 chronographs x3
    Seiko SARB045
    Seiko SARG001
    Seiko SARB065 Cocktail Time
    San Martin Soul
    Panerai PAM211
    Sinn Navitmier 903.ST.GL (Lemania)
    Chopard Mille Miglia
    Laco Kiel
    Omega Speedmaster Pro Tin Tin
    Rolex Explorer 114270
    Brietling Navitimer 01 Stratos LE
    Casio W86

    OUT
    Omega Seamaster Bond
    IWC MkXV Spitfire
    Oris TT1
    Apple Watch
    Garmin Fenix 3 HR
    Raymond Weil Maestro
    Nomos Club Dunkel
    Swatch Sistem 51 (given away)
    Muhle Terrasport II Lufthansa
    Seagull Military PVD
    San Martin Soul
    Seagull ST19 x1
    Casio W86 (given away)

Quite a lot. But the three key watches, in and out, were the Patek 5711, Rolex Ceramic and Speedy Tuesday. I expected to keep them all, but sold all three. I just didn't love them enough. You just don't know until you own and use them. I seem to prefer a few less sought-after watches.

Can I ask what the issue with the Ceramic Daytona was that lead to it being flipped or was it because you happened to own it at the same time as the WG version. It is an itch of mine that won't go away and I sit here thinking would I better with one of those rather than my 5512. I almost did a trade listing in SC yesterday offering such a trade. I have seen one in the flesh and got to try it on.

I've been a good boy this year, only 2 in - Seiko Landmaster (which I'd been chasing for a while and Ming 17.01.

Next yr will be the year of restructure - I am generally not a flipper and am quite considered when I buy; but watch fund is at a max and liquidation will be necessary. I got at least 5 earmarked (choosing is hard!) - with maybe 2 coming in.

One note for flippers - packing up and posting is such a pain, I dunno how you do it so much

I tend to keep what I buy (still own my first ever shotgun and rifle for example)... I'd gone 10 years without buying a new watch, but then I bought a Seiko SRPA81J1 as a stand-in for when my Sinn U2 was away for service. I learnt that the Sinn U1000 was to be discontinued so I bought one of the last ones available as it had been a "grail" of mine. I sold the Seiko as I just didn't bond with the black PDV.

Next year, I want to stick with the U-series theme and buy a Sinn U212 and a U1..... possibly even a Sinn UX even though it is a soulless quartz...

Same here. I don’t see the fun personally of buying and selling many watches. Each watch bought has been researched and is bought for a reason. Enjoy watches how you like but that’s a lot of flipping.

Due to all sorts of problems that are far more important in life it has been quiet on the watch front.

Out- Sinn 856 and Seiko Azabu Tailor
    In- Seiko Shogun Zimbe.

The lists are pretty much the same, I’ve ended up with a SD 43mm, an Explorer 39mm and a Black Bay Chrono. Wouldn’t mind trying a Panerai next for a change !

You are correct; I thought it a very nice watch....of course...but found that I enjoyed the weight and 'feel' of the white gold version more. Against that, the ceramic felt just a bit 'lightweight'. But all this is so very subjective. As you know well, there is no correct answer. I think you may have to buy one, just to satisfy your curiosity.

I've flipped a Blnr and a 116655 this year and have the sd50 and a polar as my daily wearer

Wow! Some serious pieces flying in and out, but variety is thoroughly enjoyable.

TZ is to blame - for the past three years I've had:

    16610 Sub
    Longines Five Star Admiral

Joined here two and a bit months' ago, and added:

    Seiko Bellmatic
    Seiko 7a38 7020
    Sinn EZM 2 Hydro
    Rolex Explorer 2
    Glycine Airman No. 1

None has left, though two of those need to go pronto due to the arrival of one of them!

Many to try in the near future too - would like to try a GO Sport Evo Pano Date, Ming 19.01, maybe a classic Speedie.

This year has been a major ‘flipping’ year for me. I’ve let an unprecedented number of watches go without necessarily replacing them with anything new. I kind of regret letting go of the JLC deep sea chrono, but it was the right thing to do. So the collection has been shrinking and I find myself not lusting after any watches in particular right now. Boring times for me watch-wise.

I flip quite often as I get bored easily . My motto is that you win some and you lose some but I usually break even in the end . The secret is to buy well at a good price bearing in mind that if you fancy a change you should be able to get your money back which means I’m very unlikely to be buying watches at RRP ( except for Rolexes , which I’d gladly pay RRP for some models at the moment )
