Has 2017 Been A 'Flipping' Good Year For You?

I has been said before that I do have a tendency to flip watches, not unlike a few others around these parts, but as 2017 comes to a close I thought it would be good to look back and reflect on my various activities from 1 January until now and see what's been going on.

It sounded like a good plan until I realised that in that period I have bought 42 watches and sold 40 of them. In addition a few watches bought in late 2016 were sold in early 2017, but I haven't included them, let's just stick to 'bought and flipped' within 2017. Here is a list:

    Orient Mako Black x 2
    Orient Mako Pepsi x 2
    Orient Mako Yellow x 2
Orient Mako USA White x 2
    Orient Mako USA Blue
    Orient Sun and Moon
    Orient Mako USA Black
    Nezumi Voiture
    Seiko 5 Sports Silver
    Seiko 5 Sports Gold
    Smiths Everest
    Steinhart Vintage Red Mark 1 x 2
    Omega Silver Snoopy
    Rolex 14060m - 4 liner
    Speedmaster 105:003-64 (Ed White)
Omega Speedmaster Co-axial Moonphase (with footprint)
    Orient Mako Blue
    Steinhart Pan Am GMT
    PRS-50 limited edition x 2
    PRS-14
    PRS-50B
    Hamilton Khaki
    Blancpain Fifty Fathoms
    Steinhart Ocean One Military - Mark 1 x 2
    Orient Mako Orange
    Rolex 14060m - 2 liner
    Seiko Fifty Five Fathoms
    Orient Monarch
    Glycine Eugene
Rolex Daytona 16523 with Porcelain Dial
    Omega Speedy Tuesday
    Steinhart GMT Pepsi
    Steinhart Vintage

All of the above bought and Flipped.

    Rolex 5512
    PRS-28 Smiths Radio Room

    My collection at present.

During the year I have briefly owned some tasty watches, but this buying and selling of cheaper watches really has to stop. So what next - for once I am happy with what I have and don't yet feel any urges to do anything drastic, but you never know.

So what has 2017 been like for you - quiet I hope

    Ken

I hate the idea of selling watches (or anything at all for that matter). I just can't be bothered with the fuss. I've a half dozen speedmasters I need to be selling, but each month goes by and they jsut sit in the box. I think that I have only sold 2 this year, an RLT 36 and a seagull 1963 42mm, and that was because they were in response to wanted threads, which reduces the effort a little bit. Might have been last year for all I recall. Do you keep a spreadsheet or something?

that is likely more watches than I will ever own, I buy very carefully and I'm always heading towards quality over quantity

Impressive, Ken! I've bought and sold a few, but I can't compete on that scale.

Just for the sake of presenting the other end of the spectrum: nothing bought in 2017, not even a strap. Healthier, but far less entertaining.

Do you sell for profit or because you change your mind about the watch?

It’s been a year of just thinking about what I like, as someone else mentioned selling is a lot of effort.

Believe it or not, manual records. I worked in an accounts department for 34 years and just keep extremely detailed records of everything.

Well done you, I would love a 2018 like that.

In the past I have put specific collections together like the five Orient Makos then get bored and sell them. Quite often sales are at a small loss, but I did offset any loses this year when I shafted Watchfinder by buying their Daytona Porcelain Dial and sold it for a healthy profit because they didn't know what it was.

Have I got it right that the most expensive of the first list would be the Glycine and the cheapest of the second the ST?

Close, the Speedy Tuesday was certainly the cheapest on the second list as I got that for RRP of £4.1k. On the first list it is between the Glycine and the PRS-50LE. I think both were around the £450 to £475 Mark. There is nothing on the first list over £500.

Some of the first list were very cheap, like the Seiko 5 Sports at around £100 each. Top of the league by a fair stretch is the 5512.

    I joined this forum in March this year and it has resulted in a difficult year for my finances. Didn't sell anything, but almost sold my 216570. I did add to the collection;

    Rolex 116710 BLNR
    PAM 346
    PAM 24
    Blancpain fifty fathoms
    Rolex 126600
    Tudor BB bronze

I would like to get a PAM 587 and a SS Skydweller in 2018, but am perhaps already at saturation level.

I can't think of any watches I've bought or sold this year. I don't think I'm trying hard enough.

So basically, you're not interested in anything £500 to £4,000? Makes sense to me.

I've never spent more than £500. Earlier this year I was considering consolidating everything I had into either an x or a y - until I realised that there was almost no chance of my liking either of them to any greater degree than I liked the watch already sat on my wrist. Now if I had ten* grand at my disposal, that would be another matter....

    *or forty, preferably

I find the prospect of selling a watch stressful but maybe once I am allowed to enter the TZ Sales Corner inner sanctum all my worries will fall away?

I'm feeling like I have enough and this year my buying has wound down rather - just Omega SM300 and Stowa Flieger B-Uhr. Sold none and am pretty content with my collection (4 Omegas, 2 JLCs, 1 Stowa, 1 Breguet, 1 Lange and Sohne): enough already, as they say!

Risk management is the simple answer to that. I came up with a theory to help with buyers remorse and flipping. When you consider buying a watch stop and think what would that sell for today if I listed it on SC.

The analogy I use is buy a Speedmaster from Goldsmiths for £3.5k and list it tomorrow on SC and you will struggle to get more than £2.6k -£2.8k for it. However, buy a Smiths Everest on SC for £170 and flip it tomorrow and you can ask the same price, just losing a few quid on postage.

I have never owned two of the more expensive watches at the same time, it is the same pot of money. I sell or trade watch A to get watch B.

    CJR Airspeed Pilot
    Seiko Baby Tuna
    Certina DS Action Titanium

Gave away for a charity donation (1):

I really hate parting with anything. Once I own something I tend to become attached to it and selling anything is really hard for me. (as 'er indoors will tell anyone who will listen!)

So I think I did pretty good to part with some this year.

    Sold-
    L&H Commander 300
    Omega Aqua Terra-25033300
    Omega Seamaster Blue (1120 movt)

To be honest though it still smarts a bit to 'lose' them.

This year was a very slow watch year. Bought the black/gold Tudor Black Bay when I was in Geneva around May but that's it. Currently debating whether to start the hunt for a BLNR or perhaps pick up a nice PAM111 that i've seen in a local jewelers.

I had a plan for no purchases this year.........

    Bought

    Tudor Pelagos Blue
    Tudor Pelagos LHD
    Bremont MBIII
    Bremont Supermarine S2000

    Sold

    Tudor Pelagos Blue
    Breitling B1

Started the year with 6, will end with 8, fighting the urge of the 372 that's on SC now. Although guarantee if I throw cash at it, i will get the call from the AD about the SD50.......

Bought a PAM25 and a Rolex DSSD, sold nothing. Plan to buy a DSSD Blue in 2018 but will offload either a Sub Date 16610 or GMT Pepsi 16700 first. I can’t justify having 6 Rolexes.

Same for me. I like all my watches (think I have about ten) even the ones that sit in the watch box but don’t get much wrist time. Just can’t be bothered with the Pfaff of selling them.

It’s been my worst year ever for purchases, with little flipped out. It’s only scary when I spend the time to list them!

In and still here, or expected:

    Some 21 watches!

Shocking, and Ive probably missed one or two in the count :(

To think, I only really wanted to add a 5167.

There will be a lot more restraint this coming year, and I will have a think about where I’m going with this hobby. I had best intentions of buying a newer Porsche this year but some how the money dissappeared elsewhere, I wonder where it went 

    Started year with no watches,

    Bought:

    Omega seamaster ceramic (black) new
Omega seamaster ( blue wave dial) used
    Rolex blnr, new
    Rolex sub , new
    Seiko , new

    Sold: 0

    To get:

    Speedy Tuesday
    14060m
    Tudor (H)

Of the above watches the most worn is the seamaster blue dial.
Still looking for the one watch I'm completely happy with.
Turning out to be an expensive hobby.

I completed my first SC sale the other day and couldn't be happier. Got to get the Railmaster and a Monaco sold though (Cheeky plug on SC haha). The proceeds will be spent in 2018 so only the BLNR came into the collection this year. Gotta be happy with that though!

As a first time seller I have to say my worries have indeed melted. While I appreciate a community-policed and feedback bases system isn't infallible , I certainly prefer it to eBay.

Risk on SC is practically zilch.

eBay I would be too scared of the “box arrived empty” or swap for a fake thing you sometimes hear.

So far it's only been a year of purchases. Think I'll look to start 2018 off with some flipping. Looking to consolidate and trade-up. I'm pretty indecisive but pretty amazed at the turnover rate some people have. Quickest in and out for me last year was two months but that was only as I got a great deal on a trade-up at a grey dealer

From a rough count that looks not far off one a week - absolutely amazing!

It is complete nuts. I remember one week receiving a different watch four or five days on the trot.

Luckily, the wife has got me distracted with doing up the bathroom, a complete refit in January. So until that's done I won't be buying anything else. In addition I have some wine due in soon, so will need to pay the duty and vat if I want that delivered.

I tend not to sell. Just two flipped for me a Vostok GMT (bough 2 still have one) and a Speedy Tuesday bought and sold.

That is a huge a mount of churn! As long as you're being sensible with your deals then it's a pretty foolproof way to manufacture plenty of excitement with so many incoming models.
