    Penny floor

Just fitting a new kids bathroom and decided for this on the floor. Levelling complete and most of pennies siliconed down. Next grouting and then apply clear resin.

Cost is £25 per sq metre for coins and about £50 per sq metre for resin and other bits so not the cheapest and certainly not the quickest but quite a unique look!

Saw a video of this online a while back. The finished product looks great but I would never have the patience for it.

Very impressive! What product are you using for the resin?

Ditto. What brand of resin and costs? Is it suitable for waterproofing other materials, such as wood?

That looks superb. I've seen these done before and always wondered if they are slippery when wet?

The pennies age still? So over time the floor colours will evolve?

The aging on copper coins is due to oxidisation. Assuming they're properly encased in resin, then they shouldn't change once covered.

You could have at least done a pattern

  10. #10
Must admit, the patterns look good, especially the bottom one.

Note to self, I do not need a penny floor

    Looks bloody good though!

I will confirm tonight when back from work but cost wise it will work out to around £40 per sq metre.

    those patterns are spectacular.
the downside of course is that you’re walking on Her Majesty’s face...
Legend says Surcouf (a French corsair who was not very popular on this side of the Channel ) wanted to do the same in golden bullions (‘Napoleons’) on his balcony. As Napoleon said he wasn’t keen on being tread upon, Surcouf put them on the edge.

    Really good job, looks great!

I have a small outside area (2m sq) i wanted gravel resin bonded, quotes were ridiculous.

Anybody know if this resin would bond if mixed into gravel of a small 2-5mm?

I always remember what I believe is a Texan expression said of John Kerry when he was a US presidential contender: "He's the sort of man who would get out of the shower to have a pee!"

Why wouldn’t it? As a bonus you’d expect the copper-plated steel coins to conduct heat better than most other floor finishes.

...however should any problem subsequently arise, any work underdone would require a brand new floor, wouldn’t it?

    Always fancied one of those.

Wonder if there are any legality issues in doing it? Not that i'd let it stop me!

That would be the case with most floor finishes.

Got a reply back from the resin seller, and yes you can use the resin with underfloor warming/heating, in fact they say the heating would help in drying out the area before pouring, off to check the penny jars

Would there be any issue with different expansion rates between copper/steel coins and the resin?

I was thinking tiles and floorboards, where you can selectively remove the flooring and replace when you're done. I would not think it is possible with this so the whole floor would have to be redone. I am not sure how one would recover the coins, if at all possible.

Another full day on the boys bathroom and now grouted ready for the resin tomorrow I've included 2 Americam pennies, a 5p and a euro cent in there somewhere but they are difficult to spot unless you know where they are....
