    The 'affordable' collection

Of course I appreciate that affordable is relative but I was having a discussion today with a colleague who asked me about starting a watch collection. He has a budget of £1000 and wanted my advise on what 3 watches he should buy.

My suggestion was as follows, which I felt covered all the bases:
    Dress watch: https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seiko-Uhr-S...-/311954464963
    Every day/work watch: https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEIKO-SARB0...-/282150576017
    Sports watch: https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seiko-Analo...-/152765751718

I actually surprised myself that it was a Seiko collection!

What would be your recommendation for an 'affordable' collection?

    Criteria:
Minimum of 3 watches (can be more)
Must be new, not second hand or vintage
Must be able to get in the UK without separate import fees
    Budget of £1000

https://www.lip.fr/en/history/nautic..._-_671505.html - you can get it sent to UK with no import as it's EU (for now) does that count?

    Vostok scuba dude.
    Seiko alpinist

Maybe enough change for a 007/009.

An all Seiko collection is a bit dull, surely?

    Dress: Smiths PRS-36 £395 http://www.timefactors.com/smithsprs36.htm
    Sports: Precista PRS-3 £340 http://www.timefactors.com/precistaprs3.htm

Possibly stretch to a Strapcode bracelet for the Alpinist.

    Good thread this!
I would say a G Shock, a Sarb033/035 and a Turtle. Not sure if I’ve bust the budget but I would hazard a guess that’s achievable with a bit of shopping around.

Has he considered a Seiko 5 + something nice with the rest? An Oris or Longines?

It's just the budget seems a little low not to end up with 3 so-so watches...

If not, I'd really suggest a few 2/3 year old watches. Way more choice then.

You're right, I did actually suggest that he goes for just 1 watch but he wants a collection so he has variety. What Oris/longines would you suggest?

Shame the speedbird and 18q are out of stock, otherwise you could get both of those. That would leave enough for a decent cheap chrono like the 1963 or an undone.

As many limited Swatch watches as possible. Sit on them for 10 years then flog them off, and buy one special watch

  12. #12
    Smiths Prs 29a
    Gshock square
Then maybe a squale or steinhart homage diver.

  13. #13
    Smiths 29b
    Casio 5600
Id like to add the Speedbird GMT, but out of stock.

    Hmmm
It's just a matter of time...

Longines conquest heritage is the best longines under a grand I think.

    Dress - Orient Bambino
Every day - Tissot PRC 100 or 200
Sports - Orient Mako if remaining budget doesn’t stretch to a Steinhart ocean 1

Smith's PRS 29 a/b is unbelievable value for a brilliant watch so I'd have one of those in a flash. Maybe add a Seiko Turtle and a G Shock for variety

    The 'affordable' collection

    3 from:

Dress: Orient Bambino or Tissot Visodate or that Seiko model that looks like a Grand Seiko (or (I understand out of spec.) vintage (can be great bargains, can be risky, some cracking designs))
Sport: Seiko SKX007 (as you suggest) or Vostok Amfibia or CWC Diver or Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster
    Chronograph: Casio G-Shock
Utility: CWC G10 or Mondaine Swiss Railway

Ps. Like the look of some of those Baltic’s, never seen before.

Interesting idea, and really a lot of choice...

Dress: Seiko Presage (Cocktail time) https://www.johnlewis.com/seiko-men'...r=Black/Silver (£340)

Every day: A Steinhart of some description (£340)

    Sports: Seiko SKX007 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seiko-Ana...-/152765751718 (£145)

    Beater: G-Shock 5610link (£75)

Total of £910. Plenty for a watch box to hold the collection.

I am a big fan of Vostok, especially with all the different bezel choices, (look on eBay) they just pop of and you can change them every day for a different look

For me a 'collection' is not something to go out and get at one swoop. Perhaps if needing a dress watch, a daily, a sports etc., but I doubt that would be necessary for the vast majority. It seems a possible recipe for spending a decent chunk of money on a few average watches, none of which may stand the test of time. Maybe better to target what is wanted, then buy one at a time over a longer period, starting with whichever style is most needed?

A really charming watch I bought recently was the Merci LMM-01. https://www.merci-merci.com/en/la-montre-merci-lmm-01/ Don't be put off by the fact it's been created by a clothing shop. It ticks so many WIS boxes - manual wind, time only, lug holes, 37mm size, etc. - and it contains a Swiss ETA movement. It's not bad at all for the price. I think it's a worthy addition to the various Seikos that are rightly mentioned here.

Or how about a one watch collection? Sure it might mean less variety but a versatile watch that can fill several roles would mean getting a level of quality you just cannot obtain in 3 £300 watches. Something like a Nomos Club which RRP's at a hair over £1000. That's a watch that you can be proud of keeping for a very long time.

I think I’ll (more strongly) suggest the one watch route. A nice Oris, longines, Nomos etc maybe something better than trying to start a collection. A collection is something you should probably build rather than prefabricate.

With a £1000 budget I’d probably replace the SARB with a prs40 and make it an Eddie clollection.

I've been thinking about doing a state-of-my-affordable-collection post, but I need to get my Flickr account in order. Until then, here's what I've got, without pics:

Seiko Quartz gold tone circa late 80s
Swiss Army Officer's quartz chrono circa early 90s
Vostok Amphibian 420 SE 24-hour dial/movement from Meranom
    Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical handwinder
Precista Royal Navy Diver PRS-82 Timefactors

I had a Seiko Sea Urchin and Hamilton Quartz Chrono but sold those. The Seiko Quartz above was a gift, but even including its value plus various straps, I'm at about £1,000.

Going forward I plan to save for a Stowa Marine Original and then a Sinn 356.

    Cheers!

    affordable with its own dignity

It is difficult to give suggestions without knowing his preferences.

But I think a Speedbird III/Steinhart of some type, Seiko Presage/SARB/5, Laco flieger, G-Shock would be a good start.

I would buy a casio f-91w for £9, spend the rest on one 'good' watch, including the possibility of used/vintage.
But then it becomes a completely different thread.

I'm currently building my own 'affordables' collection.

I'd say for the budget you've set, which is similar to mine, I'd go:

Hamilton Khaki King as a field/daily wearer. Price £340 new.

Seiko SARB035 as a dress watch. Price £240

    Seiko SKX007 as a diver/sports watch. Price £170.

That's £750, leaving £250 to supplement the collection with say a GShock (under £100), or maybe the new Timex Marlin or something from the Timex originals/archive line, or an Orient Bambino. Lots of options. I've also got the Seiko Alpinist, a great value affordable and very beautiful automatic (£290).
