Being keyholders, we have checked on our next door neighbours’ house a couple of times when the alarm sounded. Also investigated when the alarm went off at one house on the opposite side of the street. But I agree it’s very rare. Luckily false alarms in all cases in our experience.

You can’t rely on neighbours. Our alarm at home has gone off twice while we were looking after someones’s cat and neither time did anyone tell us the alarm went off.

I’ve just bought the Ring video doorbell and have two old phones upstairs in a window with the app Manything and that is working ok but I will be buying another 1-2 ring cctv cameras. Really impressed and think cloud is the way to go with cameras. Was going to get Nest but the cloud storage pricing is way too expensive.

Don’t know the brand but neighbour has a video doorbell that is motion sensor activated as opposed to recording only when the bell rings. Nearly a year ago someone tried (and failed) to break in through their front door at 3-4am while they slept. He leaves his porch lights on so the recording was clear enough to identify the guy and apparently he was caught. I was getting ready to catch an early morning flight (watch related trip ) and actually saw through my bedroom window as he arrived in his MPV. As I had my own trip on my mind I thought it was just a taxi to take the neighbours to the airport (holiday season).

The video doorbell market is quite small so there’s a strong chance what he has is Ring. Nest are coming out with a video doorbell too but as stated before the cost for cloud storage (which everyone realistically needs) is prohibitive.

I have a skip on the drive at the moment and it caught one of the neighbours chucking something in it the other day. Also we had a delivery the other day and I was able to speak to the courier and ask him to leave it in a safe place as it was very low value. Very convenient.

    Suggestions for hardware?

I manage a business organization which employs specialists of various domains to participate in ventures. We have a considerable number of hardware components lying around and there are new people joining next Monday.*During weekends, there were instances when the primary entryway was left wide open because of my carelessness. I figured that security access control systems are exceptionally useful for such circumstances so I went ahead and bought one. Now, I'd like to hire a security system installation company that would do the job for me because I can't seem to find the time for it. Would you be able to suggest other monetarily suitable choices?

A friend of mine, who owns a tyre business, has a custom system set up to deter burglars. External PIRs set off a random recording of a Rottweiler via multiple speakers which give the impression of a dog running backwards and forwards inside the building. It includes snarling noises from small speakers low down behind the roller shutters. From the outside it sounds very realistic and a stout chain, huge bone and bowl just add to the impression. His cameras would suggest that it has prevented at least two break-ins.

Working long hours and regularly overseas I dreaded walking up the stairs to my flat to find the front door hanging off it's hinges

For peace of mind I had a steel door fitted - quite frankly it was the best £2.5k I ever spent. It's wood clad so to all intents and purposes it looks like a normal door but it has 21 locking bolts which secure into a steel frame.

The company that installed my home alarm system told me there are regulations covering how loud an alarm sounder is allowed to be, especially if fitted in a residential area. Apparently they have set mine (not a Master Blaster) lower than maximum volume.

I know there are regulations on dB levels on sounders etc, however really fancy one of these just to make it uncomfortable for someone whose broken into my house. Was thinking of installing one in my hall just for the hell of it!

I too have considered installing one of these having been a victim of burglary. One of the things that stopped me was the thought of it going off in the early hours due to a false alarm, now that would be painful!

Found out last night from my neighbour that their neighbour the other side had an attempted burglary last week. Not sure of the details apart from they came in over the back fence similar to what happened to us though the access is completely different to both fences. However, they got caught on camera and have been arrested! Right result though I imagine this is rare.

That's pretty amazing. I'm surprised they didn't use some sophisticated counter surveillance equipment. Like a hoodie....
