What amazes me (always) is the 'low tech' solution for protection against sun /glare. A green blind, a sun screen. Surely there are better, more sophisticated ways(?)

When looking at the buttons and levers, I remember a conversation I had a 10 yrs back with a neighbour down the street. He's a 474 'driver' at KLM. Our kids used to play together (and are still best mates). I picked my son up on a Saterday afternoon and the father/pilot opened the front door, totally annoyed. I followed him into the living room where he was busy installing a smart box for cable TV. Installation appeared to be a nightmare - as I had found out myself a few weeks earlier. The only thing I could say was: "I feel less stupid now, knowing that a KLM pilot who's used to intricate stuff, has the same trouble that I had a few weeks back!"

Built in the 1980s originally, I don’t know what modern aircraft have instead. No electronics in the shade to break though!

A Tornado pilot who looked around some Russian jet fighters with me, said that the Russians deliberately kept their instruments mechanical. Apparently much less prone to damage from a nuclear blast shock wave, or electro magnetic pulse.

Sensible, and easier to fix in remote parts of the world too.

You'd want to keep a demagnetiser handy for that!
