That looks like a WW2 gunship head on!
That looks like a WW2 gunship head on!
You certainly wouldn't want to have that pointed at you in anger!
Very interesting to see the punt in profile. I was trying to remember the name of the boards that sit above the deck (washboards) which led me to this site: https://sites.google.com/site/puntgu...gunning-punt-1 I will have to spend some time devouring the story.
A few of the old fowling books talk about punt-gunning, and I can only imagine it must have been fraught with danger, not just from the possibility of the gun exploding but more the danger of the punt sinking. Those fowlers who made their living from punt gunning were a notably hardy breed.
This video from the East Anglian Film Archive has a piece on punt gunners, starting at around 4:30 that touches on the dangers.

I am trying to find a copy of the The Puntgunners, narrated by James Robertson Justice no less!
I’ve a couple of bikes in the garage awaiting restoration.
And another one that’s going to be a little different.
It’s a GPz750 frame which came with one of the other bikes along with a mountain of bits. I’ve just picked up a Zxr400 rolling chassis. The front end went straight on but the rear wheel is going to take a bit of work to fit properly. I’ll have to drop the engine in to get the alignment right which means finding the correct mounts out of said mountain.
I’m intending cutting off the sub frame and putting a simple loop for a race seat.
I’m hoping to end up with something similar to this but there’s a long way to go yet!
All this talk of old Wembley rifles reminded me of my old Juniors and premier pistols.
I got the middle junior (.177) when i was 14 (it’s still in its box). The premier (.22) a few years later and the older junior at a junk market (sort of indoor car boot sale).
Not that powerful or accurate, but won’t get rid to of them!

Hee hee!!
There's no 'm' in Webley!!
You have at top a mk1 later Junior, Next down is a mk2 Junior (Aluminium frame), Bottom one is a Transitional Premier, As they were being changed from the steel mk1 Prem to the Aluminium mk2, They produced some steel ones with a milled out section for a badge (a la mk2) Also, The steel frame was painted black same as the aluminium ones rather than being hot chemically blued as the steel ones were
Have to say, The Steel Webbo's are my fave pistols although I do like the Yankee Crosman pistols muchly too!!
These are mostly Webley pistols but there are a few other interlopers!!
The American contingent!
Sorry if i've posted the pics before, My cabbage aint what it used to be

Hi GM
I've not really used the 240's, I just popped a couple of pellets down the garden when I acquired them
The 600 isn't bulk fill, The 12g cart goes in round end first as the piercer is in the cap, A cart is loaded, The cap is screwed on then the plunger is pushed against something, Carpeted floor or a door, I used to use my hand but suddenly thought that if the piercer came apart it could end up in my hand with the 750psi pressure from the cart!
I have a bulk fill cap for a QB78 airgun (Copy of a Crosman 160) and thought that the Chinese may have copied them part for part but it turns out the threads are slightly different, The Crosman is imperial thread, The Chinese gun is metric
This is a copy of the Crosman rifle, I originally bought it for £20, A mate wanted it so I let him have it for £20, He had it professionally carbined and was lucky the the bore was concentric- Many aren't!!
He also had it tuned to 11.4ft lbs with JSB Exacts, The stock was in a really poor state so I ended up refinishing it for him, I quite liked how it looked and asked for first refusal if he decided to move it on (He'd mentioned getting rid of some!), He phoned me up the following saturday and told me to come and get it, He also added the custom brass parts too..
He wouldn't take any money for it but was after a steel Apel 11mm one piece scope rail, I had one and he accepted that in trade so I didn't feel quite as bad although the gun is worth more than the scope mount!!
Cheers, John
Hi
I bought a tiny Super Adept lathe yesterday, It's another that was made very close to where I live, The Portass worls were on Abbeydale road, A five minute walk from my hovel!!
It didn't come with a countershaft but very luckily, I had one in the garage exactly correct for the lathe!!
The machine came with no tooling, Not even a chuck key but it was only £40 so I can't complain! It did come with the independednt four jaw chuck though and two Centres!!
I think I have some 1/4" cutting tools that will marry up with the lathe..
John
A while back I posted about an excursion to a working steam engine/pump. One of the attendees got inspired, started digging in the back of his garage and found this:
Time is coming to get this old girl looking as good as she can
Still rides beautifully

My little mechanical project last over the last winter, rebuilding a spare Holbay 1725cc engine for the Sunbeam.
Before
After, with balancing and porting duly done. Not done an engine since I was a kid, so a trip down memory lane :)
Nice job of the motor!!
I can recall watching a Hillman Hunter H120 racing away from a brand new XR3i many years ago, There was a screech of wheels, Some smoke and the Hunter was at the next set of lights, The Escort gave up and trundled through the lights!!
I had a Sunbeam Alpine coupe, The more sedate of the two fastbacks!, It was a 1725 engine with a single Stromberg carg, My brother had acquired a pair of twin 40 Webbers from somewhere and sold the to a local lad for his Rapier, I bought his twin Strombergs from him but the inlet and exhaust manifolds were split, The centre shared bolts to fasten them to the cylinder head, The twin carbs manifold was thicker than the single carb one so I had to go to the scrapyard and buy a Rapier exhaust manifold!
Came to fit it and there was a stud in the centre that wasn't long enough so back to the scrappers to remove the Rapier one!!, I ended up back and forth for all sorts, The lad I bought the carbs off said 'It's a five minute job'!!
Anyhow, I eventually got them on and balanced but at a certain speed it felt like the ignition had been switched off!, Once it had dropped by a few miles an hour it would go again! I put it down to points bounce!! I think a contactless electronic igition would have sorted it but the car got rammed in the rear by a young lad and it bent the whole boot down so was eventually sold for spares....
This is the only pic I have of it, Did have another of equally bad quality but I can't find it now!!
John..
