Bath? Lovely city and you can potter around the area easily enough.
Hi all. We want to take a short 3-4 day city break in the UK next year. Probably April/May and travelling by train. We have done Edinburgh and York this year so looking for somewhere different.
We thought about Berwick upon Tweed anybody know the area?
Any suggestions welcome, bearing in mind old fogey/sightseeing suitability rather than nightlife/clubbing!!!
Thanks
Ian

Glasgow?
There is eff all in Berwick upon tweed. Me and the Mrs went there for a day in the summer as it’s only a 50 minute drive. We walked up one side of the high street looking at a dozen charity shops then another dozen on way back down. Think we left 45 mins after arrival!
Inverness, or Glasgow?
I'd be doing York:
- Museum
- Railway museum
- Minster
- etc
All fairly compact, unless you fancy the Yorkshire Air Museum or a look at the countryside.
Would not advise B-u-T, only beautiful thing is the walk on the hills above the seafront, where the golf course is. Bath is perfect for a long weekend or may be Lincoln (just for the Cathedral quarter)
Alternatively, train to Brussels or Bruges or Paris

I spent a day in Bath last year and I think I'd seen everything I wanted to, not sure I`d spend 3-4 days there without a car.
If the OP fancied York again he could easily have a day in Leeds or even Manchester, the rail link is very good. York's nice for eating and drinking on an evening so he could use it as a base.
Might not appeal to everyone, and I certainly wouldn`t suggest 3-4 days, but there's some good stuff to see in Hull for a day. The old town area's v. nice.....and there's always Blowers to visit York-Hull by train's an easy one too.

Depends on where your starting from, for three to four days I wouldn’t want to be having to change trains 4 or 5 times to get there and back.
Manchester, Liverpool and London have lots of options even if it’s day trips out from there on the train.
Bath.

Perth & Sterling are both nice places.
Newcastle?
Bath for a day or two and then a short trip along the line to Bristol, plenty to see and do over four days.
If you do Newcastle you could jump on the train for a day out and it’s only a short ride to Durham which is also rather nice.
Bath - lived there for 50 years. My kind of town!
Another vote for Bath - plenty to see and do and easily enough to fill 2-3 days.
Bruges also highly recommended.
Plenty to see in Oxford too.

Leeds-Carlisle (via Settle)-Glasgow-(if time somewhere on the line to Mallaig, but not a city).

Bath is great as previously mentioned but plenty of options for day trips - Bristol (20 mins on the train) Gloucester / Cheltenham / Cardiff and er Weston-Super-Mare
Norwich is well worth a visit. Spent three years there in the early 1980s as an undergraduate at UEA and didn't want to leave. Spend a week there and you can also use it as a base to visit Cambridge and Lincoln.
Winchester. Not sure about three days though.

London, plenty to see and do for a few days.
Some great suggestions there thanks.
Will check them out and see what the possibilities are with trains and nice hotels.

Cardiff - then you can say you have been aboard.

If you come to the NE then I'd say stay in Newcastle as your base. You can be in Durham in 13mins on the train for a day out, take a train up the Tyne valley, or go over to the coast on the Metro. Of course you also have the museums, art galleries and shopping in the Toon, as well as the restaurants and pubs........ lots of these!

No mention of Norwich, it’s a fine city.

Get the train to Manchester...for the next GTG!
