    Dimmer switch advice please

    I'd like to fit a 2gang 1 way dimmer in the lounge/diner
I have 2 fitments with 3 x 18w (or 28w- couple of odd bulbs)- dimmable halogen candle bulbs
    Is a 2 x 400w ok or overkill? They also do a 2 x 250w
    Thanks

I would say that 2 x 400W is definitely overkill. I'd also say change the halogen bulbs for LED: they'll last for ever (well almost!) and cost a fraction of the halogen in terms of energy usage.

    Thanks
I must admit I rarely use the lights as we normally have lamps on the switch is not particularly expensive- just really want to know if it will do the job correctly

Make sure you get a dimmer switch that is suitable for LEDS if you go that route.
    Bitter experience as they say

    Is there such a thing?

As for the OP's question, I'd go for the higher rated one. Can`t see it costing much more.

We had dimmer switches in the living room and a couple of bed rooms, they never got used, you either turn a light on or off, cannot remember when anyone last wanted a dimmed light.

As we have been decorating we have taken them out and replaced them with traditional switches.

My lad is an Apprentice Electrician, his advice, make sure the switch is compatible with the bulb being used or they can blow in spectacular fashion. Obvious I know, but some people just run into B&Q and grab the first one they see.

Yes, most manufacturers produce dimmers suitable for use with all bulb types.

Can you point me in the direction of dimmer switches suitable for LED bulbs; I haven't been able to find any.

From the instructions of the one above-
Choose Varilight V-Pro dimmers for dimmable LEDs.

Search Amazon for MK Electric list no K1523WHILV

Unfortunately not all LED loads are equal and it appears it can be a bit of a lottery.

They can go considerably higher than that too.

So you need dimmable LEDs as well as the switch and it'll only dim GU10.

    Unfortunately not what I need.

Doesn't say it only dims GU10s.
