Liverpool v Man Utd - Sky Sports New Coverage

Sky are going way over the top about this game. I get that it's an important fixture for those two teams, but does it really require a 5 day countdown with never ending interviews and debates?
The World Cup final is only 9 months away and they haven't even started one for that yet.

Agreed. Touted as a North West derby...but it's not really. United V's City yes, Liverpool V's Everton yes.

United V's Liverpool, there is a little bit of rivalry and bad blood but it's just another league game, I get really fed up with the TV channels trying to make it out to be an almighty clash of titans.

I'm getting a bit bored of the hype but it's the biggest Premier League fixture of the year, this and the return obviously.

I'd say there are more important fixtures with regards to who wins the league and there are certainly other clubs that dislike each as much or probably more.

There may well be this year. It will probably end up being more important to take points off our Manchester cousins than the *****s at the wrong end of the East Lancs Road but, taking them as individual games I know which one I want to win most.

Not in this country*. Maybe in Scotland or Argentina...

*edit: We're not keen on leeds either.

I guess you've never been to a West Ham - Millwall game and I think Spurs and Arsenal fans would disagree too.

Sorry, I was thinking in MCFC terms - both sides turn into pansies when the Citizens roll into town.

    There is this one...

I was only having a laugh anyway, I like the MU/Liverpool fixture and usually turn out for a few pints.

It’s historically the biggest game in the country and rivalry wise still is. If Liverpool had had more success in the last 20 years or so it probably would be up there with the el Classico.

Sky sports are pathetic and try to hype everything. Red Monday last year wasn’t it? Shut up sky.

The World Cup will be minimal coverage however given they don’t have the rights.

I despise everything they represent in football. Hypocrite though as I have the channels.

And what a game that was… yawn!

I'm fully expecting us to get spanked with our defence making the usual crap decisions, and individual players (yes Lovren and Can, I'm talking to you) flapping and lunging like stranded fish on a muddy river bank.

I'm glad I don't have Sky and I'm too busy on Saturday to watch it anyway.

I still want us to beat the s**t out of them though

It'd be more apt if they were showing it on The History Channel.

To be fair, your comment about City fans jumping on the bandwagon was the best bit for me.
Hopefully , you and the other umpteen gazillion fans of the "worlds biggest football rivalry" (TM) will enjoy Saturdays hoof fest . May the team with the bestest history triumph . 😂😂😂

While I agree Sky have gone over the top the tie has always been labelled as the north west derby - I would suggest that it is a massive game between the two most succesfull clubs in this country with the biggest fan base therefore the market for both sides is there - Liverpool through the 80s and Utd thereafter - there is a fierce rivalry between the two clubs and I would bet you anything you like of you was to ask a fan of either club what is there biggest game of the season then both would say this game. Its born out of respect ultimately for what either side have achieved.

Im a 40 something year old man born in manchester in the mid 70s and supported Utd through the 80s when Liverpool won everything in fact the vast majority of my mates are Liverpool fans due to that reason - I was brought up watching Liverpool dominate and despised there glory (Jealousy) and likewise Ive seen the same hatred towards Utd in latter years when weve been sucesfull.

The rivalry between utd and city is nowhere near on a par most city fans have only jumped on the band wagon in recent times and as such there isnt the same competiveness to the fixture and likewise I would suggest Liverpool-Everton are often split between families and the rivalry is different where as utd v Liverpool in the main is hatred so I can see why Sky are doing it.

I had a season ticket for many years and have been fortunate to see Utd play in many of the biggest stadia in Europe - San Siro, Bernabeau, Nou Camp, Allianz, Celtic Park as well as all of the recent premier away grounds and Ive never been more intimidated than going to Anfield the atmosphere as an away fan there really makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up - Ive been pelted with coins and been locked in the ground for 90 minutes after and trust me that police escort back to the station is scary - I assure you the atmosphere is Vile between the two sets of fans and Id never take my kids to an away game at anfield - Again I think theres an under currant of respect at the core but there is no other game like it if your a fan of either side.

Look at the amount of business the two clubs have done with each other the years 1964 was the last time the two clubs did business - look at how players have left and then joined the rivals as an example look how Liverpool fans view Owen or Utd fans view Ince as an example, it is without doubt the most important game of the season to both clubs all be it not the most vital and I think its as close as you will get to Celtic Rangers in the UK (Im sure the geordies would disagree, or the Spurs v Arsenal Derby as an example) but as a UTD fan definitely not the case

That said Sky are completely milking it ......

    PS Utd 2-1

You make me think - back in the 90s when middle-aged men would go on about how great the 60s and 70s to me, I would think 'yeah whatever grand-dad'.

To teenagers and people under 25, Liverpool as a footballing superpower seem seem as distance as ww2.

    Just found this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37673147
Apparently it's all to do with a canal, and I can't find anything that suggests that it's anything more than local rivalry. It's certainly not as intense as some of the other rivalries where fans have died.
Ultimately I think most fans will think my rivalry is worse than your rivalry.

It wasn't just any canal. The Manchester Ship Canal s opening meant large cargo ships could travel directly to the cotton mills and industrial areas of Manchester instead of unloading at Liverpool docks ( where half of it would go missing 😉, that's a joke btw) .
Obviously the dockers weren't best pleased and the bad feeling spread throughput the Liverpool area, hence the inter city rivalry ever since.
To pin it down as LFC v Man Utd is shoddy journalism at best and more likely downright fantasy.

Agreed, so Sky should also be hyping City- Everton. It's interesting that dock/trade disputes are also responsible for rivalries between Portsmouth-Southampton, West Ham-Millwall and Newcastle-Sunderland.

I'm at my dad's (who has sky) - no wonder so many of you are complaining on the sky thread if you are paying £100 a month or so to watch that.

I watched the 1sh half, then gave up, Carragher said beforehand MU wouldn't go there to play attacking football, he was right.
