There's a new series due out soon, initially in the US and then in the UK shortly after on BBC4. It looks like it'll be very interesting, so I thought I'd post a heads up in case anyone might miss it.

I just found out about this this morning. I will definitely be watching it. The Civil War was one of the best documentaries ever.

Hoping this is as good as his civil war series.

Never found a series on the Vietnam war that really worked, watching one on sky recently left me feeling the film makers had thought they'd won it.

As a vet of the war, I generally steer clear of Vietnam films and documentaries. This one looks like a "must see." Thanks for the heads-up!

A few years ago, I asked somebody I know, ( Vietnam vet. He was a pilot). Which of the Vietnam war films he thought was th most "realistic"... n
He replied none of them.....at a push he thought probably platoon.

I Visited Vietnam a few years ago, and visited the tunnels at cu-chi....very interesting place...

It's on YouTube, probably by a Vietnamese poster: only problem is when an American speaks there are Vietnamese subtitles, when a Vietnamese speaks there are no subtitles so I can't understand what's being said. I will have to wait for next week and the BBC.

(I watched an episode. Fascinating and sobering. Photographs, film, interviews not seen before.)

Spent 14 days in Vietnam touring year before last and it is the nicest county I have ever visited. The Vietnamese were some of the most beautiful, friendly, funny and charming people I have ever met.

Interested to note the BBC has edited each episode down to 55 minutes ... original episodes are about 1.5 - 2 hours long.

I see Ken Burns stopped short of implicating Kissenger directly for the collapse of the peace talks just before the '68 election.
Tens of of thousands more casualties would be taken on both sides in the following 5 years.

We've had this discussion before, in the Trump thread I believe. There was no way talks would have borne fruit in 1968. Both sides were still much too polarized and holding the belief they could prevail. LBJ tossed up a "Hail Mary" in a vain attempt to salvage at least some of his legacy, and to try bolstering his VP's (Humphrey) fading chances to win the imminent presidential election. Nixon was a conniver, saw through Johnson's ploy, and pulled one of his 'dirty tricks' to convince Thieu not to participate in the talks, thus scuttling them, along with Humphrey's remote chances of victory.

I'd be pretty sure this is simply a scheduling thing for the BBC where it might be harder 10 1.5-2 hour slots versus 55 minutes slots most of there longer programmes fall into.

I would imagine that's true for many, many broadcasters, so it's probably just packaged that way for resale.

90 minutes run time on US TV is pretty much an hour on the BBC, though - Although 2 hours is still more than 55 minutes.

The IMDB link, though, mentions at least 4 different numbers of episodes, so I'm not sure I'd trust it that much!
