Thread: What next for Smiths?

  1. #1

    Lightbulb What next for Smiths?

Recently I was lucky enough to purchase a Smiths Everest PRS-25, one of the last ones available. With these being out of stock along with a number of other smiths models and possibly no plans to be made again I am now wondering what comes next for this brand? I intend to buy a PRS-29a very soon but it would be interesting to hear from Eddie as well as the forum members here what you would like to see next? I would personally like to see a nice hand wound deluxe or even another oyster style case design.

I recently received a Seiko SBCA001, and upon learning that its now discontinued, asked for suggestions as to what would be most similar. It turned out that there was very little in that niche, and nothing nice.

So my suggestion for a Smiths would be

    *Oystery 37-40mm case, all brushed
    *Oyster bracelet, ditto
    *10atm
    *quartz movement
    *black dial, black date wheel
    *nicely lumed numerals
    *nicely lumed sword hands

Hoping my Seiko will last until that's released....

I love that seiko! to add to your suggestion perhaps the movement could be the same as the one in the smiths seafire, it ticks 4 times per second so looks a bit like a mechanical second hand and setting the time seems interesting on that movement too.

That is a fantastic idea. Divers in the military or retro style can be great sellers.

Yeah, I like the idea of that, I would love a diver with no crown guards like the one you pictured!

Both great ideas, would be nice in a more manageable size too.

I'd buy a PRS-29a right now if I were you. I've seen "very soon" become "not soon enough" too often.

believe me, if I could it would already be done, but I have had to "find" £2100 already this month for moving costs so it is a bit out of reach at the mo!

I have requested this before... in a 29A case maybe (it is mocked up here on one). It would sell like hot cakes, no?!

wow,i really like this;WW2 style pilots watch, lovely. With a white or oyster colour dial this would be a sure fire winner. I already use my silver dial Smiths Cushion Case prs36 as a daily wearer ; this design with a white dial would be superb .

Despite my earlier contribution, I would be very happy to see the OliverCD design in production. It looks superb.

Would like to see the PRS40 back with something different. Maybe a screw down crown, rotating bezel and a Precidrive movement.

Smiths PRS68 but with a Seiko 6R15 movement this time. Never really liked the Miyota that was in it.

Agreed, it looks great, I really like the marine watch look; a worthy addition to the Smiths portfolio.

I like OliverCD’s mock-up. I wonder what it would look like with a sub-seconds dial instead, and if there is any enthusiasm for that?

A small seconds dial would make it just another Dornblueth, Stowa, Archimede clone rather than an HS9 homage IMHO. And that would mean a Unitas and 42mm+. I'd see to see it in a 36-39 mm case, why not in the PRS29 cases? And please make it manual wind...

    Here's a Longines 6b/159 for inspiration:

I agree, a 36mm case would be perfect for that style. I have always wanted a watch with the sub seconds dial but not on this watch.

Always found the lugs on the 29b just a bit too long for my 7.5” wrist, would be good in a more manageable size.

Hmm, I see what you mean. I would also prefer a 36-39 mm case, with a bias towards the 36mm. I do like the marine chronometer style of the Dornblueth etc, but the size is not compatible with my skinny wrist. Not having a sub-seconds on this would not prevent me from buying it though.

Eddie's already done a Marine style watch with small seconds, I doubt he'll revisit that. It's certainly no clone though, beautiful 3/4 plate movement with a swan neck regulator.

My point exactly. A smaller central second watch would not duplicate either the Ferreira or the Marine chronometer types. And it would, unlike the larger Marine watches, have a real predecessor.

The Ferreira is marvellous, btw. Just a bit large for me.

As lively as the 29a is, criikey that 6b mock up looks good.

I have looked on eBay and the likes, but what is a realistic asking price for an original?

    All makes considered.

Eddie mentioned a while back that to make up a new batch they would have gone up in price by 40% so he didn't put the order in. Presumably he will discontinue it unless material and movement prices go down.

They do pop up on ebay fairly regularly. They go for about retail price so you do have that as an option.
