    Seiko SRP529J1

These just caught my attention as they are on sale at £169.50 (claims to be 50% off)

Look pretty smart in the pics. Has anyone got one or been hands on with one? Is it a case of you get what you pay for, or as the pics suggest a bit of a bargain?

I'm sure this has another model number for other parts of the world but can't remember it.

    *edit, SARY057*

Are they actually any good at this price point? I know they make some decent watches, but where does something like this sit in the ranks? I always thought the 5's were bargain bucket. I'm presuming the Presage range sits above them.

Yes, higher in quality that 5's, but bear in mind the presage line ranges from £200-£1000 with a huge range. (this model is the entry level presage)

    Great thank you.

I've always liked the SARB065 Cocktail Time which seemed a click up the quality scale. Seems it has now been discontinued and replaced with a new model number and titled as part of the Presage line. Far less pretty with the Presage script on the face.

See most of them here https://www.seiko-watch.co.jp/collections/en/presage/

I think they downgraded the new coctail time to the 4R movement from the 6R too I think, you're right, putting presage on a dial is not a good move.

    Very 'SARB' like...

Isn't it. With the addition of a day display.

Great value at this price if it is as well made, which presumibly it is.

    Just to say Dom...

The actual SARBs (033/Black & 035/Cream) are available brand new for about £250 on Ebay...

I'd probably lean towards the SARB given the 'low' £100 differential.

I guess that takes be back to the point of my question though. Are the SARB's actually a better watch in technical terms? Or is it just that the SARB is a better known model?

The 6R15 movement in the SARB033 is the better movement.
Also worth noting that the SARY059/SRP529 is 3mm wider with a 22mm lug width (vs. 20mm).
Finally the SRP529 bracelet differs from the SARB033 and SARY059 in that it has polished centre links.

    So the SARB...

I think the 'saddle' case feature of the SARB is very well presented (the differing polishing is very dare-I-say; 'GS'). From what I gather...

6R15 is hackable, handw -15/+25s accuracy with ~50h reserve.
4R36 is hackable, handw -25/+35s accuracy with ~40h reserve.

    Both regulate at 21600.

I would say that a SARB would be easier to sell onwards, should the mood take you...

Very good thank you. Just enhancing my enducation of these fine seemingly bonkers good value watches.

I can see why people end up with loads of them.

I bought one of these as a result of this thread. I've been thinking of trying one for a while. Or, more correctly, I've been thinking of trying something a little smarter/dressier than me usual watches and this was one option I had in mind.

It was always going to go on a leather strap so the bracelet has come off without being worn or sized.

I have to say it looks and feels like a nice watch with a mix of polished and finely brushed surfaces.
    Downsides:
~ it's quite clear that this is designed for bracelet rather than strap. When on a strap there's quite a lot of case showing between the lugs - it's nicely polished but noticeable
~ 21.6k sweep - most of my mechanicals are 28.8k (or have small second hands) and I'm surprised by how much I notice the difference. Maybe I'll get used to it and a SARB would be the same anyway.

A couple of pics below and a couple more in this gallery (which I'll add to)

Looks great. Especially for the price.

I'm glad the thread encouraged someone. Enjoy!
