Tales form the workshop - TR6 The chassis - welding has started! *update*

With a bunch of Jags off to their customers, it was time to start welding on the TR6 chassis. That involves grinding, measuring, cutting metal and welding. H&S-wise time to invest in new automatic welding masks. (Note the red Jag in the background... that needs hours and hours of welding as well...)

The pics speak for themselves, I think. This is the result of 2 days welding.

Note that the RH support with the ugly repairspot is not removed completely and that all seams are rewarded. Standard Triumph saved tons of money on welding wire... We also take time to insert additional supports. As someone said when he watched this welding-in-progress: "What's it for? For an M1 Abrams turret?"

Looks like some serious strengthening work! Makes a lot of sense to do this whilst the chassis's accessible, they do have a reputation for cracking around the diff mounts and front wishbones.

This will be one superb example when it's finished.........Just needs the steering wheel moving to the correct side

About the steering(wheel): not visible on the pics is the steering rack that always close by to put it on the right place for trial fitting. That ensures the fact that all is straight and easy to assemble at a later stage. All welding ( the Dutch word translates into 'welding caterpillars' or 'caterpillar welds') needs to be grinded down until all is flush and straight.

After this, the chassis will be blasted again and then it's time for an executive decision: the owner has to make up his mind what he wants: powder coating, industrial quality (truck's chassis) coating or paint, e.g. the stuff that's used on seagoing vessels. It's up to him. One thing is certain: it will outlast the most of us!

Tales form the workshop - TR6 The chassis - welding has started! *update*

Last wednesday, I posted a few pics of the top side of the chassis. Now, the chassis has been turned over and welding has started at the bottom side.

The TR6 chassis has an X-shaped form and in the middle, the beams are sandwiched between two plates: one upper and one lower plate. The lower plate had a lot of rust. So it's removed and the chassis beams are cut out (rust) - and new segments are inserted.
The upside-down chassis also gives room for some structural welding on the rear suspension connections; not the strongest part of the car when it left the factory. Therefore, all weak spots are not reinforced with plates.

Investment: personal H&S. An automatic welding helmet. Always nice to see some shiny equipement!

Note the removed lower plate and the newly welded pieces that are now flush with the existing beam. (Remember, the chassis is upside down)

    Strenghtening plate

    Another one!

Mounting; now the wrong way up. That's a known TR weakspot

Additional inside 'strut' to add strength.

Kindergarten techiques pay off at at a later age...

sheetmetal, patiently waiting to be welded in.
