A lad on my course at uni had a later Manta that he kept modifying. First it was a gearbox change from auto to manual which required a cut down prop shaft. Next job was to change the engine from the standard 2l four pot to a 5.7l Chevy v8. Awesome car but he was forever burning the clutch out.

Indeed. Known as the Renault 5 Alpine in France, but Gordini here as Alpine was a name that belonged to Chrysler in the UK. I think the turbo is the later version, but this one was already quite something.

A friend of mine drove one in the 80's, exactly the same colour. Great looks, but it always remained an Opel from the inside.This was the car I wanted back then but never got.

God the memories,
My first car was a metallic blue MG Metro, red seatbelts and not much else going for it, it overheated all the time until i took it to a proper rover garage and they discovered that some numptie had fitted a pipe with a valve in it backwards.
A red XR2 MK2 after that, had it for years before moving to the states. After I came back I got another one in white which was a nightmare, eventually had to have the carb rebuilt as starting it involved removing the air filter and sticking a screwdriver down the carb to jam the flap open, then cranking it until flames shot out and it coughed into life.
A succession of boring practical cars followed as I had a family.
A colleague had a white nova sport with low end torque camshafts, that thing shifted for a 1.3 but I never warmed to novas. Another colleague had an uno 70sx which was quite spritely. Always lusted after a Pug 205GTI (1.9 of course) or the obvious mk2 golf gti 16v or Escord RS Turbo but never seemed to get the timing right. Dream car at that age was, perversely a Porsche 924 turbo, seemed attainable but never found a good one in my price range. Good ones are now collectible and therefore silly prices for what would be a toy.
90's cars have to be one of the Japanese 'sports coupes' for me, skyline, supra, 300zx, rx7 and GTO. I plumped for the Mitsubishi GTO and owned one for a few years, amazing looking cars but very heavy and complex. I eventually gave up on it and gave it to my uncle who resurrected it and now tools around the New Forrest in it - if you see a MK1 GTO (pop up headlights) in red down there give it a wave.
Shame we only had film cameras, doubt I've got any pics of my first cars.

I had a 309 gti and a 205,the 309 was a real stealth machine ,I then moved on to the Astra gte 16v,quicker than the other 2 ,no sure how I didn't smash it up as I couldn't take my eyes off the digital rev counter ,happy days

I started my car career aged 17 with an MG Metro, then 205GT Lacoste a year later, then went straight to the 205GTi 1.9 x2, then 309GTi.
Loved them all and would love to have another drive in a 205GTi. Might even buy another one, but worried I could spoil a memory...
It was a toss up between the MG Metro and the Nova SR for my first car. Still not sure why I went for the Metro other than perhaps it looked a bit funkier in black with the big graphics.

Loving all the cars posted here. When I first started work I lusted after quite of few of these.
A Storm....did you have the servo retro fitted?
It had the standard GTI issue of the sloppy cross-linkage. It also had a GTI Engineering head (135bhp), Bilstein suspension, 7 x 15 wheels with Pirelli P7's and a Zender body kit.
Previously owned by L J K Setright.
I always thought the early models were non servo but were standard from about 83-84.
I remember VW fitting servo kits on earlier models, but yes horrible sloppy cross link!
I'm sure that the GTI's, including Storms, all had servos. The problem was that they were on the wrong side of the car. Lower powered Mark 1 Golfs didn't have servos originally.
When I built my last Mark 1 GTI I used a BR Motorsport cross-linkage kit, which made a world of difference. Brian Ricketts, may he rest in peace, was a genius when it came to re-engineering Golf GTI's.
I had a non GTI one of those…. Same colour boot…. The rest of the car was silver
Some tool smashed the back window in…. Went to the scrappy and they only had one in red, so, fitted that…. I've always drove sheds!

A real pocket rocket that drove like it was on rails and was unbelievably quick on B road cross country roads back in the 90s if you kept the turbo on the boil. Happy days indeed!!
Started with a (appropriately named) Nissan Cherry, then a Scirroco Scala and on to a 205 1.9 GTi...that was a really fabulous car; lift off oversteer on demand 😎

Slightly later than some of these fabulous memories, a relative's neighbour is selling his K plate Calibra, the 2.0 8v. Silver with black and blue cloth (no I don't know either). 110k on it.
It was a dealer demo, his company bought it for him as a company car, he then bought it from them at the end of the lease period, so technically 3 owners, but actually just him.
He last MOT'd it in 2014, which by the look of it had a heap of advisories (some of which started to show in 2012). It's been sitting under a cover since.
I honestly thought it was a minter, he's been starting and moving it every 2 weeks to keep everything free, washing and polishing it. That it had no ticket came as a surprise, as I'd said to him before to let me know if he wanted to shift it.
Anyway, it didn't make £350 on eBay, I can find the closed auction if anyone might be interested. If it was top notch I wouldn't have minded paying top money for it, alas it will take time I do not have to make perfect...
In its day, the Calibre was a beautiful looking car. The 16v was the model to go for though, leather as standard etc.
Bl**dy uncomfortable in the back though!

Agreed, I remember looking at one when it first came out.
The one described above sounds like it could have potential, but any car left outside under a tarpaulin in the UK will deteriorate. Sell 'em or store 'em properly, I`d never leave a car under a cover for more than a couple of months.

Back in the late '80s I was an IT Contractor.
I went out and bought my first brand new car, a Renault 5 GT Turbo.
Not mine, but the same model and year
Brilliant little buzz box with buckets of turbo lag and a dizzying 120 BHP on tap! (probably weighed less than the seats in my current Golf though!).
Only kept it 3 years and replaced it with a Vauxhall Calibra (on reflection, not a great choice, but I still think they look great - not that you often see one - and the 16V 'redtop' engine was pretty good).
The Renault, though, is still out there and taxed and MOT'd, so I guess someone is still loving it 29 years later!
