Patek 5940, what else should I be considering?

Dear All

My first post here.

I think I am wedded to the idea of a PP 5940 in yellow gold with the delightfully understated cream face.

I have never bought a watch at this level before and I am slightly nervous. I am spending so much time thinking and rethinking that I am somewhat losing my way! I have slim wrists and so, the choice available to me seems to be somewhat limited.

I have looked in WoS and the other expected places, but the only watch I seem to have seen that works on me is the 5940. That being said, these places only stock new watches. I am more than happy to consider older/discontinued watches. Are there any other watches at this price level that I should be looking at do you think?

Also, I'd be grateful on views about the black 5940 with black face v the gold 5940 with cream face. Is black a bit of a "strong" choice for a dress PP that one could get a little tired of or find difficult to live with?

I have tried to upload pictures, but I have failed miserably! If anyone could upload, that would be ace!

Why restrict your buying options to those in a certain price point, as opposed those you may enjoy for what they are, not what they cost.

I saw the 5170g recently in Hong Kong and thought it looked amazing. Not too sure of relative sizes and prices, but it’s an extremely elegant watch with the added interest of the chrono.

Beautiful, if pricey, watch -and, as a PP it will probably hold its value well. I'm more of a Lange man and you might look at their offerings - or indeed at some of the Independents.

Beautiful watch, and I love that case shape.

I suppose the Lange Saxonia annual calendar in gold would be worth considering, and a fair bit cheaper (although clearly a more simple complication). It's a more conventional case, but another beautiful watch with their classic grand date and a very pleasing dial layout.

Thank you everyone. Some food for thought here. I tried the 3940 and the 5940 but they don't quite work for me. I mean, they're lovely watches but not quite as good looking at the 5940.

I think it's the "cushion" shape that I am attracted to. Are there any other watches out there with a similar look?

Also, where is a good place to try and find a 5940? I'm quite happy with the used watch.

Haha, not nearly enough for this I would suspect.

PJS, thanks for all those suggestion. I have to say, that none of the non-standard shaped watches there come close to the 5940 in my opinion. Perhaps my mind is made up!

Sounds like you’ve convinced yourself that the 5940 is the one for you, at this moment in time.
Once you’ve had it for a bit, you may decide it’s no longer the one, and you can revisit those above (and others).
Equally, it could be your happy ever after watch… only time will tell.

I'm not keen on the cushion case of the 5940 but the black dial version does look very nice. I have a 3940 and absolutely love it.
The 5940 is not a popular model so you should be able to negotiate a discount.

I did in fact try at PP and I was told unequivocally that there was zero discount available. Pity, because you're right. I love the 5940 but it's far from flying off the shelf...

I think the gold is more classic and is likely to be easier to sell on should I chose to do so one day? The black feels more modern and it has wonderful presence where the gold is just quietly elegant.

The black dial is a real beauty and as you say is a bit more modern and quite sporty. I'd go black dial.

If you buy new you’re likely to take a big hit on whichever configuration you go for due to the reference not being a popular one. Watchcentre has an unworn 2016 model for £39,950 which is marked as negotiable. Considering the rrp is £66,850 it gives you a view of residuals.
I’m happy to send you through the details of the AD I used when I bought my PP but I don’t think you’ll get anywhere near the grey dealer prices.

Ring around and see what you can negotiate, bearing in mind the one mentioned above is at a price that’s going to be hard to get relatively near to, with still 13-14 months warranty on it.

I've just made contact with a seller in Singapore who has reduced his 5940 from 48,000 to £41,500 for an unworn watch with papers, box all present and correct. Apparently, he can also have the watch registered in my name as an added bonus.

I will make contact with those recommended here and see what happens! I'll update as well.

He says it comes with a 2 year official Patek warranty as well as he "bought it last week". Logically, I assume he bought it from Patek and is selling it for a profit, suggesting he paid less than £41,500 (his asking) for a brand new 5940. I wish there was some way of finding the deal he got! Any thoughts how he bought at that level?

£41,500 is still more than I want to pay for this, but it encouraging to see that I am not off my rocker when trying to buy an unworn 5940 at under £40,000. That's my magic number and hopefully, I'll get there!
