Which countries have the lowest watch prices?

Tried searching the forum but didn't find anything relevant. I'm in Mexico just now and most things here are very cheap, so I went to a good watch shop yesterday with high hopes of a bargain. Nope, it turns out that a Tudor Pelagos that costs about £3k in the U.K. costs over £4K in Mexico! So where do the watches in grey dealers come from? I'll be in the USA and Canada next month, is it even worth looking in the shops there?

On Chrono24, Italian dealers always seem cheap.

Cheapest prices for me are in the U.K. with a vat refund on departure.

The only reason I buy in the US occasionally is availability.

In Canada now and everything seems expensive , Newyork next so can't see that being cheap either

Received wisdom is that they mostly come from EU ADs in less well performing economies, e.g. Portugal, Spain, Greece, etc.

On the luxury stuff I find Hong Kong the cheapest by some distance, plus availability is excellent, but you need to factor in VAT upon return to the UK

If you get stung for import duty by the nice men and ladies of Border Control then the UK looks reasonable.

    +1 for Hong Kong.

soooo many watch shops competing against each other. Speaking cantonese, i found it easy to play the shops against each other for a further discount.

Oh good. I am in HK in December, and was thinking of a Grand Seiko. Apparently they discount them by 35% or so there!

    You're going to love it.

Remember that the listed price is NEVER the real price there. if they refuse just politely decline, say something about it being a bit out of your price range and walk away, many times they'll call you back in and drop another % or two.

ofcourse this depends on the watch model, don't expect it on a rolex sports or something limited edition :P

Thanks - I am also going to get a master-class from HsuKirk, who used to post here, as I am seeing him in Taiwan before I go to HK and Macau.

I'm also going to HK in December! I thought I'd have a look at Zeniths there, maybe a CP2. Could someone enlighten me on the dos and don'ts when going through customs in the UK? Thanks!

Sorry - it will be my first visit to HK, so I don't know. A whistle stop tour of 6 different far east countries mid November to early December

    Hey Kitega,

check out this blog post. it's still up to date and I followed it in May this year.

the inventory of these doors does change quite frequently i'm told so you never know what you'll find in them. many of the stores are privately owned 2nd hand dealers.

Don't look nervous! Although I hear they have special sniffer dogs which detect the more nervous returning traveller #thesmelloffear

I'll probably concentrate on vintage anyway. There should be no worries there, right?

There's no worries either new or vintage, as HK doesn't have any GST or VAT.

Its hilarious on this forum how afraid people are of UK customs btw...

If it's vintage you are looking for, you will have plenty of choice in Hong Kong

Yes, I know. Hopefully not just the big R... I think a vintage watch is also less likely to trigger customs.

In this shop in Hennessy Road near Wanchai they kept the 'good' stuff inside. I think these Rolexes were considered routine, so I'm sure you will have plenty of fun choosing.
