    Sorry to read this news. My abiding memory of him is switching on a TV during my first visit to New York thirty years ago, to see him presenting a "Telethon". He was middle-aged, drunk and sweaty, a far cry from the old Dean Martin movies I knew him from.

    I've just read that he gave permission for The Day The Clown Cried to be screened in 2025.

    I used to enjoy watching him as a child in the same way I used to enjoy Abbot & Costello. But he was in one of the greatest films of all time:
