    Watchwinder repair

I got a present of a carbon fibre watch winder box from Singapore a few years ago. Two of the four winders have now stopped working - I guess due to the motors packing in.

Can anyone recommend a good London based option to repair the box?

The box is made by a small Australian company with no UK presence

    Thanks

I think these things are disposable. I got a second hand one the other week that has died a death. It just seems easier to go out and buy a new one unless the unit is of a certain quality and price.

Mine was a single and I have seen new ones for under £150 so easier to just replace.

    I recently binned two winders.
They were both working fine too, but never used

I think the fundraiser just shed a tear reading that.

    Watchwinder repair

I recently fixed one of mine myself - despite being a muppet when it comes to practical stuff...

I have a couple of six-slot winding boxes:

that I bought for a reasonable price a few years ago. They have been in constant use and unfortunately, they started to get a bit noisier over time. Also, recently, one particular winder was not keeping the watch charged, and it was clearly turning too slowly.

So, i decided to do that thing where you whip the back off the machine, have a quick look inside, realise it's all too complicated and stick the back back on!

But eventually I decided to give it another go. Removing the faulty winder was actually simple enough:

And opening up the gubbins, I could see a rubber band that looked very stretched:

So, off I went to eBay and found a seller in Portugal. 10 new rubber bands for £5ish, including postage. So I gave it go.

Bands arrived very quickly and it was quite easy to swap the new one.

Having reassembled it all, and plugged it back into the circuit board....

    It made absolutely no difference!

Anyway, using my brilliant powers of deduction, I decided the motor must be knackered, so I set about finding a new one. Quick searches on ebay and Amazon revealed a bewildering array of motors, all looking very similar and with the same reference codes. I decided to take a punt on one from Amazon prime - an expensive variety at £6.

The swap was painless with only a bit of soldering, cutting the shaft to length (obviously all identically numbered motors are not quite the same), and refitting the pulley,

And now..... the winder is working at the right speed and is whisper-quiet again.

I am about to order a job-lot of motors from the far-east - for the princely sum of £1.42 each. :D

Makes you realise what a mark-up there is on this electronic stuff...
