    High-end watch insurance

I couldn't find a thread specifically about this - apologies if I missed it.

I am picking up a Patek Nautilus this weekend (just before the price rise - yahoo!), it will be my first watch above £15k (my home insurance individual item limit). I can't find any home insurance policies which go above the £15k limit. I have got a few quotes from specialist insurers, with annual premium around £400. I realise this isn't a lot compared to replacement value (c2% pa), and is potentially a "fair price". But it still seems a lot compared to the home insurance route I've used thus far (which costs me around £50pa for all my current watches which do total more than the Patek cost, but the difference being I don't wear them all at once I guess).

Just wondering if I'm missing any avenues here, or is it just a case of paying up the 2% insurance cost each year?

Also any recommendations for specialist insurer (including those who have had to claim)?

    Thanks a lot.

P.S. I have actually found a thread from Feb 2017, but can't open it ("£" subject header issue).

I use TH March and find their prices to be most reasonable (although I've never made a claim) and have very good coverage. Previously paid £180 per year with them on a £10k watch but also paid £150 per year on a £6k watch so the insurance premium doesn't appear to be particularly sensitive to watch value. Btw you haven't mentioned the value of the nautilus in your post but based on the 2% it's approx. £20k?

    p.s. congratulations on the purchase!

The £15K individual limit on your existing policy is just that. It should still take items over that value, they will usually just need to be specified on the schedule. Give your insurer a call and ask them - if they can do this for you it will be a lot cheaper than seperate insurance.

Every company is different. The policy that usually gets support on here for collections under normal contents insurance is the M&S Premier policy which covers individual items up to £15k. However, if you have an item worth more than that they will not cover it separately and, instead, will insist on cancelling your entire policy with immediate effect. Even if you say that you will insure it elsewhere M&S, knowing that you have the watch and presumably thinking that makes you more of a target, will still refuse to cover your building and remaining contents.

Ever considered just being pragmatic . The chances of being burgled are far lower than people think. Insurance companies use every excuse not to pay if you are unlucky..wrong locks is a favourite, or inadequate window bolts, weak doors, etc etc. Undervaluing goods, not storing them safely. Every trick in the book.
I gave up on content insurance many years ago. Saved far more than I was ever likely to lose. Building insurance, that does make sense.
Btw. No one will give your Nautilus a second glance....now a fake yellow gold Rolex, that would be different.

TH March were good when I made a claim. It was all resolved and a replacement watch (Sub ND) replacement found in a few weeks.

Thanks guys. Yes, it's the "basic" 5711 model, £18k RRP (soon to be £19k). I'll try both TH March and looking at my current home insurance policy terms (which I think is with AXA).

Thanks too for the modified link above, that did indeed work (our work Internet Explorer is pretty archaic and temperamental - e.g. writing this reply takes far longer, as it fails to recognise every 5th or so key stroke!).

I'm with Hiscox after having to change for the same issue when I got my 5712. I've never had to claim but believe they are very good although my premium is now £1150 per annum.

+1 for Hiscox they are the only company I could find that would cover a single watch with a £15k++ value prior to that I was with M&S who will cover uo to £15k and were very good

    Assetsure

I use Assetsure, they aren't the cheapest but give a very comprehensive insurance, as I wear my watch everyday and everywhere, it was required. Maybe not the case with your 5711. Worth a look all the same.

Congrats on the new watch by the way.

I used the broker Lark and they came in cheaper then Hiscox and only £200 more then my M&S renewal.

Another vote for Hiscox, you can just tell them the collection value. No requirement to provide annual valuations on individual pieces. Good if you flip but make sure you have enough data to avoid problems.

personally I disagree, it really depends on what content you have........

I have nothing of high monetary value, no jewelery or watches or antiques, so I too don't bother with content insurance. But having family members that are worth a few bob and have been burgled several times, I think it would be foolish not have it.

(admittedly they have very nice houses, which is an obvious target.)

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I delayed watch pickup until this Friday, was looking again at insurance tonight. For me, Home Protect appears to be the cheapest by far (similar to my current home insurance quote), and it's 5-star Defacto with reasonable reviews - backed by Axa and others. But, the e-mailed quote doesn't match up to the saved quote, so I'll hold off any recommendations for now ....

    High-end watch insurance

Dont want the hijack the thread so apologies to the OP, but my question is related. If I were to purchase a watch from a member here on here and pay via BT or PPG, would the transaction statement be enough for proof of purchase/value confirmation for the insurance? Or do people generally ask the seller to write up a quick receipt?

Correct, but you do need to declare items with a value higher than £15k.

Do people value their watches for insurance purposes on a replacement basis, say at dealers' prices? Can sometimes be quite a gap between those and what was actually paid and there's not much point paying for the higher premium if when you need to claim the insurer asks for proof of what you paid...

Just wondered if you went with Home Protect? It says the maximum high value item cover is £5,000 unless I've missed something.

I've had comprehensive cover for £300 a year which includes 3 reasonably high value watches away from home. Adding a PP for 19k and some jewellry for 12k and best I can find is Hiscox at £960 a year.

Hi Devonian - I chose against Home Protect because they would not cover my flat (as a 2nd home). So, I didn't investigate it any further. No mention of the £15k limit though to me.

So, I'm much in the same position as you - either Halifax Ultimate or Hiscox (around £900-£1000 pa, which is £700 more than my current home insurance), or TH March for the Nautilus alone at £425. Halifax and TH March both need a safe when not on the wrist.

I'm currently uninsured - once I get my head round the £425 cost, I'll probably. go with TH March once my safe is fitted.

Cheese for the reply. I've got a safe already so just need to switch providers. I'll probably go with Hiscox as they seem to be recommended here quite highly.
