Steinhart Ocean Vintage Red - new model out - the black dial is back!

For fans of the Steinhart OVR - seems they've just released a Mk3 (I assume it'll be called that anyway). Black dial as per the popular Mk1 but this time, a tapered bracelet thinning down to 18mm at the clasp. Same 42mm case for now....

That is excellent timing as I did a WTB for another Mark 1 the other day. I did like the greenish plots on the Mark 1 over the brighter yellow on the Mark 2, but this is a halfway house, you still get the yellow plots, but with the nice black dial.

    The bracelet is an improvement.

I will have to give this one some thought and it isn't much dearer than the others are selling second hand for, so still excellent VFM.

Indeed.. I posted on your WTB earlier, soon as I spotted this. They're a cracker of a watch for the money as you well know - your Mk1 keeps most of my collection in my watch box as a result!

I don't know how many versions they can do!

Well... once the 39mm models come out, double that figure perhaps?

Is it any different to any other watch brand - how many Submariners or GMTs do we need, but people seem to appreciate variety and choice.

Yes but it is a homage to one watch. It is not a variation other than a little bit of difference.
Doesn't bother me but it is indeed comical to see Mark 4 homage.

I hope the Mark 1 will now be cheaper. I want one. Hopefully I won't have to sell my OVM Mk 1 to do that.

No. The used Mark 1. Just like the OVM Mk 1 it seems to have a higher price that the RRP.

Oh it won't be cheaper at all. Those mark1 used and now sold out versions are sought after. Sellers are aware of this and thus want to cash in on the rarity. The odd one pops up here in sales corner for normally a reasonable £250 (ish)
With Ebay a used mk1 is normally a lot more

I know. I I had the money I would have bought Wallasey Runner's Steinhart when he had it for sale. It was a good price.

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on the updated model, I have been tempted to get one of these for a while and the black dial with tapered bracelet has persuaded me, just placed an order. It will be my first Steinhart, though I recommended one to a colleague a few years ago who bought the regular Ocean One Black and has been very pleased with it.

I had a mk 1 with the hesalite crystal a few years ago, and I really regret moving it on. This looks like a return to form after the mk2, at least for me.

Looks great, however, having tried a couple of Steinhart Ocean's after a while I find the long flat lug design just doesn't work for me. A little bit more wrist hugging downturn and I would certainly buy one and consider it a keeper (possibly).

I was just about to order one when I noticed that the Crystal is no longer that lovely High Dome. It now looks to be lot flatter and nowhere near as nice. A pity that as I would have loved one with the original crystal

Call me old-fashioned but I prefer the flatter curve. The high dome always reminds me of the bottom of a jam jar lol

True but nothing a bit of classic modding wouldn't sort and possibly, improve.

As Ken says this might probably the best version.
I think the bracelet and clasps on these need to be worked on a bit, particularly the clasp.
A lot of details they get right.
IMO, all Rolex homage makers could learn a thing or two from Ginault. A little pricier but they feel much much better made.

Oh no , so the mk2 had the high dome ? Or was that flat also ?

Can Ken Wally runner clear this up if he's around ? My question is will this mk3 version have the same sapphire crystal as the light grey dial mk2?

I currently have the Mk 2 Vintage red. I have owned it less than a week and I really wish the dial was darker!

Anyone know of any Mk1's being available or as yet if the new dial is actually close to black?

I hope some pics arrive soon to as I am so curious!

All the best Chaps and Chapettes!

Ginault looks pretty faithful and I like the sword hands. Don't care about all this made in US or not apparent controversy. Have you tried one?

I doubt any mk1 will become available unless they are on the second hand market ! Mk1 had the greener lume and black dial . Mk2 the old radium looking lume - this mark 3 seems to be the black dial and old radium - unless I'm mistaken

Handlebarchap can you post a few pics of your current mk2 -please I'd really like to see it

Never heard of Ginault but they make a nice homage and some very interesting reading:

Rather like this blue bezel model:

I just received back an email from
Steinhart HQ. I had asked about the new crystal height, colour of mk3's dial and if the possibility of an OVM but in mk3 form.

The response was the following only :

    "Hi Colin,
Pls look at the watch in the shop"

    Marvellous.✈️

I've just pulled the trigger on the new vintage red and I will update when it arrives.

I am particularly keen on the black dial return and I think the bracelet will make a difference. I kept the mk 2 for a week or so and when I found a new one was coming I flipped it. They are pretty heavy and my skinny wrists are not ideal, but I am excited for the new arrival. Pictures and first impressions will follow shortly!

tey have changed it from a fairly solid 22mm width all the way through to a 22-18mm taper.

It's heavy up top so it may balance better.

Got mine yesterday. I found that the dial isn't as black as I thought it would be and the lume has a David Dickinson orange tinge to it.
