For anybody with a weakened immune system, e.g. during chemotherapy, a few germs can be fatal.

I then sat there for the next hour feeling awkward & dirty with a pair of brogues on me as they all had socks (and sock like things) on them.

That practice seemed to be common enough when I was a lad back in the early 1980s, when I called to my mates houses to play Subbuteo, in the same way people had ornament cabinets, 'good rooms' for dining on Xmas day, sets of encyclopedias, barometers in the hallway, etc. I thought that game was well over. We often wear socks around the house but having a 'no shoe' rule indoors ???

Do people still do that; have a mandatory rule to take their shoes off and walk around the house in socks ? I can see the sense of that practice on farms but do people still do this in leafy suburbia ?

What dirt? That's what doormats are good for.

as an electrician I am in and out of peoples houses everyday, a lot ask me to remove shoes, I refuse and offer shoe covers, if they dont like that, I sight H&S, and tell them if I cant wear them, then no job.

irony is, most who ask have wooden floors.

I'm not sure about the OP's expression "one of those houses..." because it suggests a degree of snobbery on the part of those who ask for shoes to be removed. I personally don't think it's unreasonable to ask guests and visitors to leave their shoes at the door. We have wooden floors on the ground floor so I'm not too uptight about it, but if you're walking into another person's domain, their rules apply. That's surely just common sense and respect...

When I visit my inlaws I keep my shoes on to keep my socks clean. 🙄
I don't park in the drive either, it is littered with screws and nuts bolts and tat.

So I'm not sure that your "never" is quite accurate.

I always thought shoes off was the norm and people who keep shoes on in the house were the unhygienic oddities. Certainly everyone on both sides of my extended family and every single one of my friends families have shoes off indoors.

We have dogs and wooden floors, so we tend to not bother, but know several people who do.

I completely agree. I think twice, about taking me shoes off after just putting them on and realising that I left the urn on on something that I have to go back in for. I still take them off even though it's a faff.

I tend to roam around indoors bare-foot, it's just so much nicer. However if I am working outside and need to come in for anything then the shoes stay on, e.g. loading/unloading the car etc. Work boots/Wellies are always off at the door though.
Honestly can't see the point wearing shoes inside I have to say.

I thought it was normal to remove shoes in the house.

We have just moved to Prague, and let me tell you, the Czechs are masters at the "slippery sciences" - have only seen this religious determination not to step inside with outside shoes in Japan...definitely nowhere in Europe I've been so far.

On one side, makes sense I guess not to bring too much crud from outside in the house, but to take your shoes off before entering the house/flat and viceversa is a bit too much. We've had some Czech guests a couple of times since we moved months ago, and they were insisting to do the same, take shoes off an leave in the hallway outside the flat, I have insisted to at least bring it in and thankfully they agreed. On the other hand, when we went to visit, we were given the impression that some people would just not allow you in at all or if they do you might not be in their good books ever again if you had to insist to keep your shoes on and they gave in to your request.

All these "ideas" must be ingrained in people's minds and collective psyche since ye old day of agrarian living centuries ago when muck and mud were pretty much standard.

I have Polish tenants and they all leave their shoes inside the front door, and keep a communal pair of slippers at the back door for going outside for a smoke.

I think people with dogs can never be as fussy as non dog people TBH.

"She's left her slippers off again!"

Luckily she has her own armchair.

    Cheers,
    Neil.
