    New explorer 1

Picked up a new explorer 1 today couldn't be more impressed especially with the 2016 upgrades. Such an understated watch from Rolex. Any more owners out there?

Not an explorer 1 owner but own the 2 and love it. Best value watches from rolex.

One here. It is amazing - 6 weeks in and haven't worn anything else. It's a collection killer.

Another 2016 version owner here. It's the perfect explorer 1 IMO. 39mm feels and looks just right to my eyes, quality bracelet, they've sorted out the stubby hands and the fully lumed numerals look great.

    Another '16 owner here.

Load of nonsense about the hands in my view... they were never an issue except for some kid living in his mum's basement who typed it on t'internet once where lots of people suddenly agreed on the basis of 26mp macros. Rather than, you know, reality.

The lumed arabics though - yep. It needed those.

I love them, but I think they could have made the ROLEX font a little smaller.

I'm nit picking though, it's a great watch.

Traded mine a few weeks back. It's a great watch but lack of date killed it for me.

I noticed the stumpy hands the first time I saw it in an AD window. Did bother me, can see why it wouldn't bother some though.

That's always the big one for me and rolex - love the symmetry of their non-date models, really appreciate a date and really dislike a date bubble.

Explorer is a great watch, but my sweet spot currently lies with my SD4000 - especially after their latest attempt.

I totally agree with you, sometimes, some people wind themselves up over trivia.

This thread needs pics. Lots of Basel Explorer 1 pics.
I was never sure about the watch until I was offered one in a trade and decided to give it a try. So glad I did. The Understated and subtle class with a hint of sports watch make it a firm favourite now. Perfect size and dressed up or down it looks great.

As soon as I've got past the photobucket issue I'll get some pics up.

    A 2014 Explorer 1 owner here.

FWIW, I regard the "stubby hand" thing as a non-issue too !

Unless you sit around staring at your watch, although I suspect that some here do, it is not ultra-noticeable. Tells the time perfectly well and looks great /stealthy IMVHO. Very chuffed with mine !

I have the 2016 Explorer 1 39mm - superb - I love the case compared to the SubNDC - for date duty still have the SD4K.

Here is one of my pics of the Exp 1 2016 with its all lumed indices.

Before I got my Explorer, I wore one of these (among others) for a few years.

It too shares the proportion of the previous Explorer with relatively shorter hands. Didn't bother me a jot and it remains a great watch.

That said, I do consider pretty much everything about the Explorer to be perfect (for me).

I do understand what you mean about the hands but I do feel the lumed 3,6,9 is really what has made the new one such a complete watch for me

    Had one for a while.
While I can see why people love it, didn't do much for me.
Hardly wore it and traded it away.
    Too bland for me.

As a 16610 owner, I'm used to and prefer thin hands on Rolex, so the short minute hand on my 2014 model has never presented a problem. I'm entirely neutral on the lume filled arabics, I think both styles work well, and on a non-lumed version, it's not exactly difficult to tell then the time in the dark, thanks to the 12 triangle.

I do however find the new hour hand to be too fat. If you compare it's shaft with that Martyn's to mine, it's noticeably chubby. And if that isn't an open goal, I don't know what is....

PS those are Donald Trump's hands...

36mm is the way to go, classic case size.

    Rolex Explorer – 2002

I think it depends on the size of the wearer. The below looks great, I think the 36mm would look too small here.

Personally I like the 39, with non lumed numerals.

photos can be deceptive. Here is the SAME 39mm Explorer 1 on my wrist - taken in the 'defacto' phone shot

Such a brilliant shot, perfect lighting!

I prefer the 36mm, but that's because I have tiny girly wrists.
The spec of the current 39mm is superb.

This watch is top of my wanted list - could somebody share a lume shot please, I'd love to see how well it works in the dark.

Here are a series I have taken: it is a very easy watch to read in all conditions:

As they say - flies under the radar - but shares the heart of top spec Rolex.

For comparison, the previous lume in action. An early morning shot, under a tree, on the one day this summer, the sun shone in Edinburgh.

There are some wonderful pictures in this thread, with honourable mention going to sean.

This is the Rolex that I have come closest to giving in on. Had my hand drawing my credit card from my wallet, actually.

I have the '16 214270 an a 114270 from mid-2000s, they're both awesome. I prefer the thinner lugs on the 36mm 114270, more of a coke bottle shape but the construction of the 214270 and the full lume on the numbers is perfect. The newer Rolex bracelets are the only bracelet that I actually prefer to have hugging my wrist, most of my other bracelet watches have some slack. Between the longer hands and the lumed numbers, that's what caused me to pull the trigger. FWIW, I have a 6.75" wrist and feel fortunate that both watches work well on my wrist. Now I just need a 1016 to round out the collection, right?
