Modded my Rolex. The natives won't be happy.

Members might recall I'm not afraid to chisel (literally) off a cyclops or two, and this mod has been on my mind to do for some time so here goes.

Ok, it's not a huge change and I'm not the first to do it, but I have to say - I like it.

The perfect Submariner to my eyes. 5 digit case, maxi dial, black bezel insert.

I have no idea what any of that means. But well done. Is there a before picture?

Most mods do offend me, especially to Rolex, but this is fine by me. Indeed, my primary assistant Phil has done exactly this to his 16610LV, albeit largely to protect his green bezel insert from harm.

    Nice job.

So did you swab a maxi dial from an LV or just the insert from an LN?

    Looks pretty amazing!

In short, he has mixed the black maxi-dial (big dots) exclusive to the 16610 LV with a black bezel insert rather than the green which should go with it.

Just swapped the bezel insert as Haywood correctly guessed.

A simpler task than swapping the dial :-)

Just needs the clasp off a 114060 and I think you've got the ultimate Submariner.

I'm glad someone explained as I had no idea what had gone on. I was waiting for an after shot with no cyclops.

I'm usually a purist. But, when I had a Submariner-Date and a Yachtmaster at the same time, (not dial swap) but I preferred the maxi lume plots on the YM. And thought about getting the right maxi dial for my Sub.

Never got round to it, and sold them on a couple of years ago.

Anyway, waffle aside, yes that does look great the Submariner-Date that (sadly) never was

    What is this witch craft????

Joking. Looks great and I keep meaning to do it to my LV.

I prefer the maxi dial to the old small one and the 5 digit case to the 6 digit.

6 digit case, in my eyes, is a complete mistake.

Very much agree. The new bracelet and clasp are by far the best. Just a shame about the current case!

I'd like to mod my 14060, 2 liner dial with maxi hands and markers, five digit case with lugholes and six digit glidelock bracelet. That would be submariner perfection to me. I like what you've done mate

wee bit fun that can be put back to stock pretty easily....................... well watchmaker can do it :)

    Screw the purists.
Looks great. I think Scoot (Omegamaniac) had done something similar.
I have nothing against Rolex mods as long as they look good.

Same here, and I actually refreshed the browser to see if the 'after' shot hadn't loaded. These mods are too subtle for my limited Rolex knowledge.

Now I've compare standard Vs this, I like the modded one. Looks great

    Nice job.

A great mod. I've worn one of my LV's with a black insert for years, and leave the other as intended - but I'd never thought of it as a way of protecting the original green insert, I just preferred the look.

Also, I think a forum member had Rolex return his LV sans cyclops after a service which surprised me.
It's just a matter of time...

    No it's quite simple.

Looks good! I prefer them with black bezels. I put a baked dark chocolatey coloured one on mine when I had it. Bezel mucking about is half the fun of the old ones :)

    looks good op.

I have a green date wheel and a gold crown fitted to my lv. I tried it with the black insert but only lasted a day with it.

Would like to do this to my flat 4 lv to protect the bezel.

Looks easy on you tube but the fear of cocking it up has put me off, is it easy to buckle an insert removing or fitting?

My sub-owning days are behind me ( I think), but in my opinion this is the way the 16610 should've looked. Maxi dial and hands looks better to my eyes, and the 5 digit case and bezel are far nicer than the latest version.

Perhaps buy a complete black bezel assembly and change that over. this lets you keep your green assembly intact.

That's a v expensive way to go about it

The alu bezels are mounted on black resin. It's pretty hardy. The equal pressures exerted with thumbs to push it out of the retaining ring and back in again are really unlikely to bend or warp the inserts.

What would a replacement flat 4 insert cost? The member is not confident about successfully removing his flat 4 lv insert from his bezel. I would think that my suggestion would be money well spent in his case.

How would you suggest he bought the replacement bezel, mount and retaining spring? Rolex don't sell them separately and won't accept tampering with their watches.

Jocke has an even better one.

Or meet up with a friendly tz-er who's confident and would do it for him. There are a few about.
Both free options and as previously stated, when using equal thumb pressure it's not very easy to break a bezel. Flat 4 or otherwise.

Or yes, he can take your advice, buy another bezel rig at 400+ odds for genuine before paying somebody else to do the job of fitting it in case he loses the click spring.

I have no investment either way but it seems odd to encourage someone to spend hundreds when there's no need to.
