My Vintage Seiko - Wedding Perfect!

I don't wear this as much as I should.

It's a January '78 Seiko 7000-8000 that my father in law gave me around 18 months ago because it was broken. He bought it new at the time and it worked flawlessly for all those years. He didn't want to spend money repairing a watch he bought for £3!

So off it went to Brendan (webwatchmaker) who diagnosed and replaced a broken main spring and it's been running well ever since.

As I prepare for my brother's wedding next week, obviously the biggest decision is which watch to wear. I've had my suit, shirt and brogues for months, that was easy. Which watch is the hard bit....well, until today.

I got this lovely little watch out of the box earlier and instantly knew I'd wear it for the wedding. It's got a history, is suitably dressy and understated, fits beautifully under a folded cuff and matches my medium blue suit perfectly.

However now I have a new dilemma....original bracelet or leather?

    Decisions, decisions.

I'm not a huge fan of the bracelet design and would love a 19mm oyster. I've been looking for one off and on for ages but never found anything I like. Does anyone know where I could get one that would fit to the case? I'm not a fan of straight end bracelets. Anyway, here's a couple of pics to illustrate my dilemma:

It looks awesome and a way better watch on the steel

The leather to me cheapens it and draws the eye from the dial

Bracelet 100% unless perhaps you want to match with brogues, but if black, stay steel.

The best watches are the ones from family members.

The brogues are tan Loake Chesters so no match. Thanks for the kind words.

Sorry, I meant I'd consider a strap to match the brogues, so a tan, but not the black one in your post.

That said, the bracelet is far smarter. Enjoy the day and don't forget to flash the watch!

It's a 009 and I will in the evening if the all-blue insert I've ordered arrives in time. I don't think the red in the bezel is the look I'm after.

That's a lovely watch and great for the wedding.

If you wanted to wear it on leather, I would suggest a croc/croc finish would look great and make it more a more dressy set up than the bracelet. I don't think the present leather strap brings out the best in it.

But the bracelet looks smart, regardless

Actually, that sounds like it could look really good. Hope the insert arrives in time.

Thanks Mark. I'm usually a black dial diver man but I wanted to give blue a go for a change. I like the dial but I'm not overly keen on the red in the bezel so we shall see what the all-blue looks like.

I think a blue croc grain would suit this lovely little piece very well and would be my choice. However, you might be struggling to pair it with those tan brogues.

I hope to see pics once it's together, David. And I blame you for the fact that I'm looking at blue bezels online with a view to re-modding one of my 007s!

I would go with a nice leather strap, but agree with others not the one you have fitted there which is rather drab.

Agree with the person that suggested a nice crocodile strap, or croco grain of you don't want to spend that much on it. Get yourself into a jewellers and compare some straps to see what suits it best.

    Have fun.

Bracelet gets my vote; either way the watch looks superb and it works well on a black strap.

Looks great on either! I like the idea of croc though, it would elevate it a bit more. It's a beautiful watch either way

Morning all and thanks for all the positive and helpful comments. I agree that it might be let down by my particular leather so I might buy this (the strap, not the watch!):

Is the dial black or dark blue? Maybe my screen is acting up...

  27. #27
I'd keep it on the bracelet - it's a sport watch not a dress watch, and I think black croc grain will look odd.

If you're set on a strap - as it's a blue dial, and you are wearing tan brogues, then a light-brownish strap or even a tan suede might work better than black?

Oh I've just remembered - the lugs on a 7000-8000 are not only 19mm but also the holes are extremely close to the case - only the very thinnest straps won't get scratched by being fouled by the case. I had mine on a black Hirsch Crocprint for a while, and that got inevitably gouged. Very tatty.

The vintage Seiko (on bracelet) looks better for a wedding.

When else will your wear it if not to a special occasion like a wedding?
