I just noticed that the Watch Talk thread count varies: It's currently shown as 99,990 on the main subforum index page but as 99,982 on the Watch Talk thread index page. Oh well, that's odd.

It probably caches the count in certain parts of the forum... Otherwise the server would have to count up all those posts every time the page loads up for each visitor. Saves the server from going up in smoke!

Possibly. I'll keep an eye on how quickly new threads are added to the count.

Ah, it's not cacheing. A new thread was just added to Watch Talk and the count went up to 99,991 on the main subforum index page and 99,983 on the Watch Talk thread index page almost simultaneously.

I suspect the discrepancy is because some threads have been hidden in some way and one count includes them and the other doesn't.

I bet thread #100,000 will be some newbie starting a thread called "which holiday watch", "do you match your NATO to your pubes" or some other such nonsense that's been discussed to death here.

I hope it's something esoteric and interesting.
