    GoT

Everyone tells me how good this series is
I tried watching it before, started from the beginning with series one, but tbh I found it boring. Just loads of people going round bashing each other on the head and bonking each other.
I want to give it another go, but I will bore my tits off if I start from the beginning again.
Where should I start watching? When does it start getting good? How much plot can I afford to miss at the beginning?
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

The plot threads are so complex that unless you watch from the end of S1 then you've lost it. You need to know why Ned Stark fell out of favour, why Arya is on the run and why one boy is crippled. I could go on but then if fighting and bonking aren't your thing then I'd give it a miss. It has dragons too. I like dragons.

don't get me wrong glammo, i like a bit of fighting and bonking as much as the next man

it just seemed very thin on plot.

I find it great. Great script, great acting, great cinematography, great SFX, great character development, lots of violence, tits, and humour (sadly missing from so many programmes) .

My wife on the the other hand hates it and would much rather watch Downton Abbey (which I loath with a passion) or some other crappy period drama.

personally I would watch S1, S2 and S3 ( just so you can watch the Red Wedding) - draw dropping! And then decide whether to continue - you will because by then you will have an emotional attachment to at least 4-5 characters and will want to know what happens to them

Plus unlike many series, GoT are not afraid to kill off some of the main characters when you least expect it. Brutal .

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

Give it a go Dave.... I'm a sophisticated chap, like you, but, suspend your brain and enjoy it for what it is... a riotous and gratuitous fantasy romp... lots going on and you can't really skip it... I am very excited for 17/7!!!

GoT? You mean Game of Thrones? Never seen a single episode. I figure it's too late now as I'd need to take a couple of months off work to catch up with all the previous episodes.
Started watching Vikings a couple of months ago. Haven't a clue who the characters are. Hairy great Vikings with tattoos all over their coupons appear to be laying siege to Paris every other episode. There's been some cracking good rutting scenes involving a French princess and a hairy great Viking converted to Christianity. I'd convert to Scientology if it meant I could spoon with her.

I thought it was rubbish at first... gave up at season 1. Wifey stuck with it and I started watching again in about season 5 and loved it.
I guess it's a bit of a slow start in terms of "the big picture" but now its started working towards a conclusion its superb viewing.

If you feel like giving it another whirl then I would advise sticking it out from the beginning, otherwise you'll miss some absolute treats (red wedding, viper vs mountain etc).

The good thing about it, is there is very little in the way of utter fantasy animals. So it's just like kings and queens and fighting, with the odd bit of supernatural tossed in.

It starts very slowly, some he acting is plain awful. But it gets a lot better by S2 and then goes along at a decent pace (still some parts of episodes that feel like filler).

I really started thinking it was crap but stick with it (I think all of it is on NowTV)...the story arc of Jon Snow, Arya and The Hound are worth it. The chicken scene in the tavern is superb.

    ?!

It has one of the most complex plots I have ever seen - it's mind boggling how many strands are ongoing and how the author weaved them all together so well.

Do invest in watching it from the beginning, you must pay attention and properly watch it.
It builds and builds and the twists take your breath away,it is simply stunning.
Forget about the bashing, bonking and dragons, it is the multiple stranded plot that thrills so much.

It is up there with all the best political and espionage thrillers, some of the episodes will leave you upset but so entertained.
It just gets better and better which you would think is not possible.

Tyrion Lannister becomes the absolute star of the show, the script is so well written and the cutting humour is a delight.
    Closely followed by Jon Snow.

That's the thing. It's slow because it's placing lots of threads that all get woven together later. It's fundamentally a complex political story where nobody is completely good or evil, everyone just has different motivations. You get to see how divisions and alliances are formed over time, sometimes as a result of the non-obvious consequences of isolated events (a bit like the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, to draw a real-world parallel). It's one of the most realistic alternate-histories produced to date. It's fantasy, but nothing happens for purely fantastical reasons or to get the plot out of a hole without explanation.

I've only caught up recently as I fell away from it after season 3. Glad I did as it's sbout the only series I've actually watched from start to end. I think it gets better with each season.

Not forgetting season 7 starts from 17th July.

Millions would disagree with you. It's probably by now the biggest TV show ever, so much so that the author has said he could easily do 20 spin offs (but won't).

I would say plot wise it's as complex as anything I've ever watched and almost impossible to catch everything. So much so that there's an after show 'show' called Thronecast (with Sue Perkins) that explains everything that's just happened in the episode and how it relates back to previous series. That is well worth watching as well.

I've just watched season 1 again and Verv is right - it's good but relatively dull compared to later seasons. Surprising how much more relevant it is second time around though and how much I missed first time.

Certainly worth persevering if you have the time.

I am sure if I saw him in real life, I wouldn't be able to get past his incredible characterisation! Terrifying in a really sadistic, creepy and very powerful way. Nasty, nasty piece of work!

When I broke my hip I watched the first 5 seasons pretty much back to back. Then I had to watch all the "making of" videos. You've got a lot of spare time when you break your hip. One of the best things I've ever seen on TV

  38. #38
I think Game of Thrones probably now suffers from over-hype i.e. it's so revered that it can't really live up to expectations. This is a common issue imo. I found this with The Sopranos - I only started watching it after the original run had ended, and although I liked it, it was never going to be quite as good as people made out. A lot of people said that about Breaking Bad, but in this case I'd watched the first couple of series when it was still a cult hit.

GoT is very good though. As others have said, it took a couple of seasons to hit its stride, but it's been excellent since then. My wife gave up after the first season didn't realy grab her though. (Again like Breaking Bad, or even The Wire - the first seasons were a little slow and ponderous).

I like the way that the fantasy setting is really just incidental to the main plot - I can't really be doing with orcs, hobbits etc. My only criticism is that they've almost over-complicated the various plot-lines, and they need to avoid "doing a Lost" where it turned out most of the plot-lines were nonsense. (I don't think this will happen though).

You must have started at the wrong end of the series because they only get as far as Paris in season 3

I watched the first series, but never felt any urge to watch any more.

    Just not my cuppa really.

Someone once told me that it reflected real life, when I mentioned that the sex just seems to be dropped in for titillation value...

I had to smile at that, as it's mostly about dead people walking and Dragons in an imaginary world!

All seemed a bit silly and gratuitous really, but whatever floats one's boat.

There were a couple of scenes in the brothel that really seemed gratuitous and really added nothing to the story or the character. I think the first season is pretty crap TBH but it really picked up around mid way through S2.

It's not for everyone, to be sure.

I grew up with Fighting Fantasy, Dungeons &nDragons and Warhammer (just as it was getting going), so I've always had a "fantasy bent" (ooh matron), and so for me, I love it.

But if you've never had that sort of interest, I can imagine it wouldn't appeal.

And, on a serious note, I imagine sex in Mediaeval times wasn't quite so kinky or fun - I mean, no showers, no tooth brushing, starvation, bubonic plague and worst of all ladies with hairy armpits. No wonder it was such a horrible time ;-)
