Long overdue return to biking ...

I don't even have a license and went and bought this ...
    Ducati Scrambler ...

I've ridden moto-cross a fair bit in the past ... but that was a long time ago!

Looking forward to getting trained up and back on two wheels.

Did some classic shopping for lid, jackets, gloves and boots the other day ... tried to suggest all my old kit had worn out at the same time .. had a smile with the shop assistant on that one.

A few mods to the bike planned already ...
    LED indicators,
    Tail Tidy,
    Frame plugs

Still not sure on the colour - might get some parts wrapped / painted.

Lovely bike, good luck with the test and all that. I have forgotten the licensing laws but can you still do the whole test process in 5 days or is it longer?

  3. #3
Lovely. I do like these. A friend has one among his other bikes and rides it more than any other - same colour.
It's just a matter of time...

So I need the intro training CBT - one day course ... then there's the theory ... tried some free practise tests which all look OK ...
My instructor will make an assessment on amount of training needed which will vary from 4(very confident) - 7 (novice) days.
I'd rather get as much training as possible so will assume I'm doing 6 days even with some previous experience.

Will definitely be taking it nice and easy though.

Yes! This would be my ideal ... already looking at re-colour with wrap or paint and new panels ...
Red is a good colour IMO .. slightly influenced by LFC (!)

Any changes you've made you'd recommend?

Can't make my my mind up on carbon panels or matt black - I'm leaning to matt black.

Apart from the side panels I've not made any changes. I did try the comfort seat but ending up using the stock seat.
I love it just as is. My mate has the sporty exhaust which does sound great

I would get carbon panels, but I like the weave in carbon.

Good luck with all the tests.

I swopped my BMW boxer for a 62 (400cc version of the scrambler) a week before I broke my hip, hoping to ride it soon.

I think the bike looks great in yellow - though also very nice in red

I'm surprised to hear you can get a tail tidy for the bike - it's already pretty neat/minimal

    Enjoy :)

Lovely bike was looking at these in a dealers in Carlisle and they are tempting.

Take all the training you can get as it's seriously dangerous out there! Returned to biking (fair-weather lazy cruiser!) couple of years back after a break of 25years or so and drivers seem much more aggressive to bikers than in the past.

Stay safe and remember 'There are bold riders and old riders, but not many old bold riders!'

Lovely bike - enjoy and take all the training you can. I would recommend iam for the free training.

Nice bit of kit, I do like the Ducati scramblers. Unfortunately at 6'5" and not the smallest bloke, it's the monkey humping a football effect.

    Wondering what frame that is
Looks like some pretty big engine mounting plates to fit the motor in?

Spotted this in a Youtubers vlog the other day ... apparently UK Police are riding Ducati Scramblers now as well ...

Anyway - progress update, CBT, Theory, and Mod1 done .. Mod2 next.
Bike back from service .. installed: LED indicators, Comfort seat, 2017 throttle tube, tail tidy.
Next: Black ceramic powder coat exhaust, tank side panels..

Training and bike coming along well :)

Looks nice. It's a long old process isn't it? I decided to take it up last year but went the 125 route. So CBT last Nov, did 2500 miles on a 125 since then, theory a few weeks back and doing DAS in Sep. Still deciding what to buy...

Well - it took weeks longer than anticipated .... test centre shut down for 2 weeks start of August ... and last week I managed to forget my license on mod 2 test day.
Anyway - passed mod 2 this morning and have spent the afternoon blasting around the Chilterns on my Scrambler - at last!
Seeing my bike for the first time today, my missus just asked what's next in the saga of my mid-life crisis?

    Congrats on passing your mod2.

If you want to learn more, I did the police bike safe course last month and really recommend it

Thanks for the recommendation - I'm looking for some advanced training so open to suggestions.
Interested to hear from any others about how much road experience I should get before looking for further training?

    Well done with the test.

Thames Valley advanced motorcyclists is a huge club and not far away in Wokingham. They also have quite a big social scene if thats your thing.

There is another IAM outfit based at Missenden - AAM (Aylesbury?), but I have not ridden with them, my old trainer is there -

If you google survival skills, Kevin is a really good trainer.

Just for disclosure, I have no link with any of them

Get some riding under your belt, IMO. Further training is overrated. I have seen some really dangerous riding by Berks with iam/rospa stickers on.

Ride until you don't have to think about actually operating the machine any more and can concentrate on your riding technique. Then buy a copy of "A Twist of the Wrist" by Keith Code and read it twice. Or if you want the cheesy 80's film version, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjL_BO4fPpU

Advanced riding lessons can be a mixed bag. Some people swear by them, others not so much. All I can say is I know an advanced instructor and he crashes more often than anyone else I know.

But if you want some evening viewing with more of a road craft flavour, you could try https://www.youtube.com/user/RoadcraftNottingham

I watched a fair bit of the roadcraft content in the run up to my tests ... thought he was pretty good ... but nothing like doing it yourself in person.

I've been spending hours on the bike - love it ... it's like a drug!

Ian may I compliment you on your courage to buy the Scrambler before passing your test. Your confidence has paid off, enjoy the bike. I keep looking at these but with seven bikes in the garage already I need to moderate my urges.

Back to riding is great ... except...

I've been loving riding around the Chilterns on my bike .. massive smiles !

    BUT - I've discovered a downside ... I've developed tinnitus.
During my training I didn't wear earplugs and a couple of weeks ago I noticed tinnitus had set in.
    - I wonder if a better training school would make recommendations on the best kit to use whilst you're learning to get you off on the right foot.

I've worn earplugs since - but it's too late. I now enjoy that noise you get in your ears after going to a really loud concert all the time .. oh well.

Anyway - anyone else reading this .. earplugs should be a must IMO.

Ian a jet helmet would look nice when riding your scrambler and I found the UK made Davida the most quiet helmet I have ever had. Helps to protect your ears too.

    I wouldn't wear open face ... I have one of these ... https://www.onyerbike.net/clothing/h...att-black-matt

Might not get many style marks - but it's not too heavy and gets good reviews for noise.

    How it looks now ...

... bored waiting for Spring so I can get back on my bike ... anyway .. in the meantime I've been busy upgrading.

    Bike went from this ...

    to this ...

I'm undecided on having the headers ceramic coated .. too much?

  42. #42
Lovely, that looks like a fun bike!

Regarding enhancing with aftermarket stuff, my philosophy is; don't put anything on it that makes you seriously cry when you go down with it. (that's when, not if ;-) )

    Have fun, and ride safely!

It needs some mud flaps! I must be getting old!

Lovely colour. Yellow bikes always appear to be going 10% faster.

    No, that's red :-P

But I agree, yellow is a great colour for a bike. Even a GoldWing looks good in yellow ;-)

That looks so much better. I wonder why manufacturers produce dowdy vanilla versions, other than to allow for owners to personalise of course.

Not sure tinkering always works though. The guys who did my Scrambler......

    Have just turned this out......

A question of degree and taste, I guess.

I remember seeing this when it first arrived ... very nice ... how do you get on with that seat and those tyres? Have you kept them?
This weeks MCN has a great review of the Kawasaki Z900RS vs BMW Pure R9T vs Triumph Thruxton Racer

My brother in law just got the Z900RS ... I'm tempted by the R NineT!

The seat is fine (for short runs!) and the tyres add character - the road roar they give off is like my old Defender, but they grip without problem. The RNT is a great bike - like the GS but without the unnecessary baggage. I bought an RR as a stablemate, and am now in bike heaven. So much so, all performance cars have been sold!
