    Land Rover Series 1 pics

This was dragged (literally) in to us last week for some much needed TLC.
Its spent the last few years sat in a grain drier rotting away.
The owner doesnt want a complete rebuild but just wants it to run and brake. Its going to be used to thrash around the fields with his kids at harvest time. Its been in the owners family since new and was purchased back in 1948.
Has the original 1.6 ltr petrol engine.
Also comes with copious amounts of rat $h*t!!

I love it :) I have a 1964 S2a and it's great fun in this weather with the roof off and the windscreen folded flat. My 19 y/o son is very much a petrol head but he thinks mine is the best car in this weather. Glad this one get some family love.

Yes. Ex parachute regiment with service record, still running a 2.25 petrol engine fitted by the REME in 1969 and running like a Swiss watch!

Screen down driving is the best. I do love a vintage 4 wheel drive and would love a SWB Landy.

I had this for the first time this year at the weekend. It's criminal really but it needs a bit of work done to it which has kept it off the road.
With luck and time I should get round to finishing it in the next few weeks.

3 bearing, duck egg paint still in place (mostly). I think the 5 bearing crank came in around 1980 for the series 3.

What can I say, I've got a Caterham 7 and I'm a bit of a petrol head. Rare bird though, they only made 48.

Would love to see some photos during the restoration.

I had a '55 Series 1, but LWB (109"), that I very much regret selling. Having stripped it down and started the rebuild a change of work meant I no longer had the time to devote to it. Oh that I still had it now.

Prior to that a '79 SWB Series III. Lovely as a weekend runabout, but wouldn't want to rely on it every day!

Landys are like that... it's very rare to find an ex-landy owner that doesn't regret selling; BTDT :-(

Several times I've considered buying back into the marque but put off by the stupid prices out there since the Defender ended. Even Series vehicles are daft money :-(

I have to ask - is that engine mounted in the rear? Looks like the Landy has been modified for some mysterious reason........

I dream of an old Series, but they are frighteningly expensive here.

Oh, and fold-flat for the win :)

An old M38A1CDN3 I had. Issued and did service in the Garza Strip.

Nice. I see yours also has what appears to be a bridge rating plate on the front. The "02" on yours and the "2" on mine were used to (I believe) avoid bridges being overloaded when crossed by a convoy of military vehicles. Ours both being under the 2 ton rating.

Indeed a rating plate. Up until the 80s (when I left the army) there were rating plates or numbers on military vehicles.

Here's a pic of the 60s and 70s Dutch (DAF) YP408. It was rated 14 ton. This is a mortar towing vehicle, the infantry's people carrier had a 13 ton rating...

(That this vehicle has 'Menno' on the front armour has nothing to do with me ;-) )

I know its now running and lighter a few pounds of general detritus.
21 is fixed (cheers Dudley) MOTed and running well. Shame it sat in the garage for a couple of years but its slightly scary just how fast time goes. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Yes you're probably right, we aren't 100% sure TBH but the owner said it was purchase then so assume he's right. We think it's more early 50s

First thing was to check for cranking, the battery was dead however there were various bad connections and earths which were stopping it.
New battery got it cranking with a huge spark.
Next was to fix the fuel pump which was caused by dirty contacts on the back of the pump.
Checked the oil and water ok.
Fuel tank was completely dry, £10 in and she started on the key......we couldn't believe it.
I have a video which I'll stick up later- slightly profanity but justified seeing how she started!!!

Now waiting for shoes and cylinders and he's having the car back.
Sadly he doesn't want any work doing, this is crying out to be done as the chassis is almost perfect.

    Yours looks stung BTW!!

Lights through the grill like on that one are generally from about May 1950 but it may well have had a newer grill fitted at some point, chassis number would confirm for sure. Probably worth checking as there's a fair price difference between a '48 and a '50+

Edit to add that it also doesn't have the 'fishtail' chassis, more evidence that it's early 1950's imo.
