    Smaller Chrono

I am looking to add another watch to my collection.

I currently switch between my Rolex 15200 Oyster Date (Work, Smart & Dress) and the Omega Seamaster 120m (Walking, Casual and Holiday).

I have been looking at a Diver to add but can't see anything that really pushes my buttons, and fits well.

I fancy trying a Chrono but it needs to be ~37mm max really as I prefer smaller watches. Its also a thickness issue with my skinny wrists so I think Quartz is probably the way forward.... Also nothing hand wound.

    Stuff I've tried on/discounted:
Omega Speedmaster Auto and Reduced - too thick/chunky, even the Reduced version
Omega Dynamic Chrono - I think this is going to be too thick based on my experience with the AT Quartz although I do like the design.
Heuer Monza - Too Thick and shiny.
Heuer 2000 Chrono - I've had the normal 38mm 2000 non-chrono and did not really bond with it and moved it on
Heuer Carrera Chrono (CV2110) - I had a Carrera GMT Re-Issue and it was nice but again, did not bond with it and moved it on

Certain No - Mercedes Hands and Roman Numerals

Two I have not tried but like the look of are the IWC 3815 and 3741.
I had previously been looking at the 4515 model, the 34mm 3-hand auto but with the smaller dial/larger bezel it may wear a bit too small. The 34mm Rolex 15200 is a lovely fit for me.
I am not so fussed with the Alarm function on the 3815, how does that work?
I like the look of the 3741 as a more tool watch and the simpler design.

    IWC 3815 (34mm)

    IWC 3741 (36mm)

Are there any other smaller (<37mm) quartz or auto Chrono watches I have missed?

I believe the best sized Chrono out there is the Sinn 356 (at about 38mm). Might be a brand a bit lower down the pecking order than the IWC but I keep mulling over these (say £1500 ? brand new)...

I'd say Blancpain Villeret Chronograph 1185...great watch and great movement...

Beautiful! But weren't they hand wound?

Yes it is a manual. Lemania 1873 movement, same as used in some moonwatches.

Sorry, missed that issue in the OP but I'd suggest people try a manual, I actually like winding it.

I briefly owned a 3815. Although a little small for me, it did wear a little larger than the dimensions would suggest, especially on the integrated bracelet.

Here it is next to a DA46 and Pelagos. My wrist is just under 7.5".

  10. #10
The most sensible chrono i have is Eddies PRS-12, albeit it's 38mm. Also remember if you want small it must be simple otherwise you end up with a cluttered dial.

  11. #11
As lovely as the Sinn 356 is, it's certainly a rotund little watch, far too thick going by the op's requirements. Now the IWC 3741 covers all the bases. Great brand, mecha quartz movement and sensible dimensions. Good luck with your search

The IWC 3741 is right on the money for me and meets your requirements.

Depending on your budget, there are some 38mm Zenith El Primeros. They have a very small lug to lug so wear nicely, and being an in house movement, nice and slim at about 11mm.

these Dynamic Chrono's are available at around £1500 but a rising star certainly in terms of recent appreciation. Sadly the Targa Florio edition is now way over £2k a few years back they were £1400. I believe they are 38mm.

This is perhaps 38 or 39mm but wears very nicely, sitting low on the wrist with a short lug to lug. Perfect size for me.

Also look at something LIKE THIS

Eberhard do some nice stuff, and on the smaller side too. This more recent Extra fort is auto too.

If you truly want a smaller and thinner chronograph then you are on the right lines with the JLC derived mech-quartz movements in the 2 IWC watches referenced in your first post. It appears in a number of other watches to give you options:

    JLC Master-control Chronograph:

JLC Master-compressor chronograph (although the mens black-face model is incredibly rare):

Porsche Design Titan Chrono (by IWC):

Omega Constellation Chronograph (although it does have roman numerals.. sorry):

    Tudor Monarch:

I have owned the last 3 and all have been good reliable, sporty watches. I only have the PD left which is used as a gym / sports watch as it is really light, has a useful complication for timing stuff and a easy wipe down rubber strap (+ is a bit cooler than a fitbit)

Despite a 38mm size, these are really thick due to the DD piggy-back movement - more so than the speedmaster reduced, as the case is quite slab sided.

    I sold a targa-florio for £400 back in 2005 (Doh!).

I've just ordered one of these and it's only 1mm over your preference but widening your search to include 38mm watches will open up a much larger choice to pick from.

As you have found, any automatic chrono is going to be thick, I love a manual wind watch personally.

How about a Daytona? Self-winding, slim and 38.6 mm in diameter.

A whole world of lovely chronos opens up if you allow manual winding.
Also, Guinand are just about to release this

Just under 38mm, auto, and 14mm thick.
Nice looking I think for £1500 or so, brand new.

    Blimey, thanks chaps!

Sorry, should have added budget was around £2k..... And I would like a date function.

Sinn 356 - I had seen this but discounted it due to the thickness.
Blancpain Villeret Chronograph 1185 - Looks over budget I am afraid
Tag Kirium Chrono - Not fancying that I'm afraid
Daniel JeanRichard Highland - Like the Sinn, looks a bit too thick
1964 Heuer Re-Edition - I had the Carrera GMT re-edition and did not bond with that style I'm afraid
Timefactors PRS-12 - Forgot to add I would like
38mm Zenith El Primero - Looks lovely but I fear well over budget
Hamilton H71416137 - Again looks like it may be a bit too thick.
Rolex Daytona - Well over budget

Interesting, seems to look a lot bigger than the 34mm suggests, not too bad though

Revue Thommen Airspeed Titanium Chrono in Quartz (the blue dial in the picture below) or Auto - with either the Lemania 5100 (black dial, below), or the Valjoux 7750. Allow discontinued but available NOS or used. Great little watches - the quartz is37 or 37.5mm; the auto is 38mm.

There's a 38mm Prime for sale over on the Dutch forum, well under budget. It's hand wound though, but that does help make it nice and flat.

Manaul again, but the great Lemania 1872 movement.
    And only 33mm diameter.

That's the same 'Class' as my Zenith above, from the 2000s, very good value now. Beautifully finished and perfect dimensions. The bracelet is really nice but it looks much more elegant on a leather strap as per my photo.

Ah ha, missed that it came in a plain white/silver version too. Looks promising, I quite like the black version with the numerals and probably better lume. Thats the one thing I miss on my Rolex 15200 is there is no lume so later in the evening gets a bit difficult to read with available light.

These are really comfortable to wear. Spot on with 38.4mm diameter and low profile. Just sold one of these but looking at that picture makes me think...

The more I look, the more I like the look of the Zenith El Primero range.

Although initially discounted, I do love the simpler version 'HW' below, the hands are lovely.
