The sun shines right into our back room in the morning and the thermostat was reading 31ºC at 7am. It dropped to 27ºC once I'd opened the back door, but the cat made a rapid break for the shade of the fern bushes. She could have sat in the kitchen which is pretty cool so I don't feel too guilty.

At the moment SWMBO is pulling down all the blinds in the house during the daytime. Then c. 7pm every window get's fully opened however it was still 26 degrees in the bedroom when we went to bed last night. When I got up at 5am the bedroom was at 19 degrees - still too hot. Spent the night ON the covers with bum in the air. On the rowing machine in the barn with a cement board roof it was a bit hot as well I can tell you!

Rumour has it that July is set to be the hottest ever... however that might have been a scare story from the Daily Mail so that's probably total 'below the belt'.

Flights cancelled [in the US] because it's too hot for planes:

More than 40 flights have been cancelled - because it is too hot for the planes to fly.

The weather forecast for the US city suggests temperatures could reach 120F (49C) on Tuesday.

That is higher than the operating temperature of some planes.

American Airlines announced it was cancelling dozens of flights scheduled to take off from Sky Harbor airport during the hottest part of the day.

A few years back in Tuscany, the thermometer hit 45+ C. Whee leaving the Coop in Figline Valdarno, a temp sign next to the parking showed 52C! I couldn't believe, but the on-board thermometer on the dash of our black V70 with black leather on black tarmac showed the same!
Funny thing is that it felt a lot hotter a week later when we stayed near Venice @ 33C! Has to do with humidity I suppose.

I drove from LA to Vegas yesterday and it hit. Went out for a few beers in Vegas last night at 9pm and it was still 40degrees.

Don't think there's going to be much sun-bathing done this week!!!

Mwah. Our Frenchies are quite expressive and efficient in telling us what they want.
    >40 Celsius in the shade here.
Have a 70 liter bucket half filled in a drafty spot.
The Frenchies like, bark, to be dunked every now and then and go run over the land in the blazing sun chasing eachother and imaginary rabbits.
Then they come back to be dunked again.
They could jump in and out themselves easily enough but think it much more fun to lifted up and rubbed wet.
At the regular hour they make a racket to be fed but it is still way too hot and they will throw up what they just gobbled down. Yhey have to wait till it cools off somewhat for their own good. So even though they are quite apt at telling us what they want, that is not necessarily best for them.

I get up with the sun now so I am back from cycling before the hhhhhot wind picks up at 08.00.

My son came back from school today with a letter from the Junta de Andalucia, department of education that school is out for the summer starting Thursday because of the heat.
He was just summoned outside by the Frenchies to dunk them...

Brussels. I am sure the UK is breaking at least a dozen laws and directives allowing people out in this heat! A zillion euro fine is warranted, surely!!

Joking aside, when I lived in Asia the joke was any super-hot day in Beijing was reported officially as 39 - because at 40 it was illegal to keep the factories open!

Coincidence that this occurs just as Britain begins its withdrawal? Hmm............

You should all count yourself lucky, I spent all weekend and into Monday sweating my knackers off to pick up some bug last night which resulted in me sleeping in the spare room with tracksuit bottoms and a fleece and wrapped up in the winter duvet shivering all night. The wife and children couldn't sleep due to the heat.

its cooler today/this evening in london, the haze meant it didn’t get hot until 11ish and it started to cool down around 5:30 its 27.3° in my lounge now so a whole degree cooler! but feels much more comfortable due to a breeze. (when i posed yesterday it was 28.3° at 10pm so its actually several degree cooler)

Kids primary school sports day today, baking on the shade free playing field all day, lost the daddy race and knacked my knee in the process. Grumpy, hot and in pain now.

And are we surprised when people say the Brits love to talk about the weather?
Is it still the case that there are more convetibles sold in the UK than any other European county? Why .. because we enjoy or celebrate the sun more than any other country.
Now it's a bit sunny .. why complain? We know it will be over in a day or so .. let's deal with it! At least it's not boringly always hot.

True enough, it's not Afghanistan: god knows how troopers carry all that gear, and, not only that, enough water! I am guessing without the sums, but surely you would need at least one litre per hour minimum. Thats a lot to carry!

I'm sitting in my garden in North London and it's actually feeling a bit nippy, I guess I must have acclimatised to the heat now!

I'm just outside Kingston and it's 5 degC colder than it was at this time last night.

And a breeze - bliss. Looking forward to a more comfortable sleeping night tonight

Rather more than a hint of one!

Spent the day trying to get a dyson fan as ours has given up, but no stock anywhere & ended up with the purifying one.

Took the Z4M to work today over in St Albans, gentle cruise both ways & the world is a happier place for me vs the tin box commute. Turned the hell of M4 & M25 to something enjoyable for a change - just don't like putting 'dull miles' on the car, but was so much more chilled despite driving a faster car more slowly.

Hoping it stays for the weekend as have friends visiting with kids & prefer them to be outside, as our house isn't kid friendly & the parents don't seem overly bothered about their kids pawing our possessions...

Guessing this is our summer though based on previous years. All the heat in one week vs spreading out a more moderate heat for longer.

I have done some deep research into this and concluded that I like September. During Jun, July, Aug if you have a hot day it is followed by a hot sticky night. Get into Sept and you can have a lovely sunny day, 22 degrees or so, but at 5 or 6 o'clock the temp. Suddenly drops like a stone giving you a nice cool and fresh evening and a goods nights sleep. That kind of weather suits me, roll on Sept (and the footie season).

I've worked out that I get maybe five ideal days a year: 21, 22, blue sky, white clouds and a gentle breeze. I can remember two this year. Yes, I'm fussy! Then again my breathing is quite poor so heat and humidity extra uncomfortable.

Apparently it's hotter here than Mauritius today!

I know we Brits like to complain, but I've had two Indian people tell me over the last few days that the British sun is 'strong' and it was too hot for them (And both are Indians who've lived in India, not simply of Indian descent).

The fact the tarmac on the Hogs Back has melted is also a pretty good indication that "It's Too Hot"!

And there lies the problem with the UK and hot weather. No AC, carpeted floors, heavy curtains, brick walls etc.

I'd rather it didn't get this hot myself, it's horrible when you're working. Had two days straight out there all day trying to do physical work and it's so draining. Thought I was going to pass out yesterday!

Everyone moans about 'us brits' and gives the "it's 35 here" but it just always seems a horrible heat here. I've been to plenty of hot countries and it just seems so bloody uncomfortable when it's hot here. Best thing I ever did was install a ceiling fan in my bedroom, don't know how people can deal without them when it's like this.

Mind, it's still cold for some people. Does anyone else notice how you can still drive about and see people wearing heavy clothing? The other day when it was sweltering I saw a bloke riding an old mountain bike up a long hill on a bypass wearing jeans and one of those huge 90's style black padded puffer jackets! You always see the Nepalese types wrapped up warm still too. As soon as it's no longer cold I'm in shorts until such time it's actually cold again.

One of the advantages of a very old house and a thatched roof is that it never gets warm in this weather. The lounge is lovely but going outside it hits you like a wet blanket. Upstairs is a bit warmer but not enough to affect our sleeping. 3 yr old sleeps through (I hope I don't regret that!)
The down side is that it takes the heating a long time to fully warm the house in winter but then it stays warm fairly well.
    Ah well colder tomorrow.

The weather specialists insist that it will be scorching here in Holland tomorrow. Friday a little cooler, Saturday and Sunday a lot cooler. Temps around 20C and western wind, up to 23 kts in the weekend. Guess who's on a boat this weekend!
Next Monday I will help my colleague: the office in the school where I work will be closed after my retirement in 3 weeks time. He's moving to a smaller office for him alone. I hope that the weather will be a little pleasant!

I'm in Berlin with Carlton-Brown and my mate big Pete. Each day it's been 30-31°C and miles of walking. At least the hotels cool. Drinking gallons of water and beer. The bunkers have given us some respite A breeze would be a Godsend! Phew!!!

It was great yesterday. Sitting on the M25, stationary for more then an hour whilst they swept the debris up. However Sunday afternoon was spent on the same stretch watching holiday makers struggling along the hard shoulder with their luggage. Then arrived in Brighton along with another 300,000 visitors. Brighton beach looked like it did back in the old days before charter holidays.
