Posting pictures of old PP, Rolex,Omega,Seiko, Hamilton, Bulova adverts

Is it fine to post pictures of old adverts run by these companies for historical interest? My mother in law has a national geographic collection going back to the 50s and there are some lovely old ads from these companies that would be fun to post here for people to see.

That would be very interesting; I'd also be interested in any Universal Geneve examples.

Spent a few hours looking through my mother in law National geographic collection, it starts in the early 1950s and goes to the late 80s down here and she has the late 80s to 90s in London which when I get a chance will have a look at.
Was fun to see adverts for Omega, Rolex, PP there. Some observations, I didn't find any Rolex/Omega/PP adverts in the 50s and 60s, was all Hamilton and Bulova. I Started to see Omega, Rolex, PP, Seiko in the 70s right up until the start of the 80s then watch advertising dropped off in NG until the late 80s when they start to appear again.
I rather enjoy the advertising style of having a little story to go along with the ad, bit dated these days but I like it.
Anyway some of the more interesting ones I will put directly in the others I will link to the imgur album. Enjoy!
    Rolex Red Sub 1977

    Pan Am GMT 1972

    Pepsi GMT 1975

    Omega Speedmaster 1970

    Omegas 1972

    PP Nautilus 1979

    PP Nautilus 1977

    Seiko 1976

    Bulova Accutron 1963

    Hamilton 1962

There's 64 ads in total so far I think, lots more Rolex, Omega, Hamilton, etc
Hope You enjoy and the pictures don't kill your webbrowser I forgot to resize them before uploading!

This is fantastic. I really enjoyed the 'little dated' adverts of people using the watches in harsh environments. I know I'll be safe should I find myself up a mountain or in the desert. Alas worst mine will see is when the air con packs in, but one can dream.

Thank you for taking the time to do this top man !

Yes I really enjoyed all the different stories in the Rolex adverts! Now not sure what stories they could run, "One Direction singer wears Rolex while singing, His Rolex ran perfectly despite the loud noise, heat, vibration and groupies throwing themselves at him!" I guess some people would still wear a Rolex while 'Adventuring' today.

Those 70s Rolex ads are wonderful examples of good, long advertising copy. You don't see much of it these days.

    Fascinating, thanks for posting.

I dimly remember a couple of the marketing slogans - 'You can tell by the men who wear them' and 'Someday all watches will be made this way'. Great stuff.

I noticed as well how the watches they haven't changed much the omega speed masters and the nautilus and the Rolex look the least dated, Rolex strategy is very clever.

Thank you for an interesting post. Nostalgia. I remember drooling over the Rolex adverts in my father's Time magazine growing up in the 70s. !!

Well, if you make the same watch for sixty years, it's not really going to date.

    Great post, thanks for sharing.

I find most interesting how little the watches have changed, at least on the 'surface', since then.

Thanks for posting those. I seem to recall Movado used to advertise the Museum watch in National Geographic too, but perhaps I'm getting mixed up with Playboy.

There are some movado ads in NG didn't take pictures of them.

    Nice pics.

I think I have all of those and more that I have collected from old mags from the '50's onwards and keep in a couple of loose leaf folders.

There was a similar thread some time ago but here are a couple of mine you don't see so often, plus an incredibly cheesy Seiko one, "wanna see my Seiko chronograph?"

This was a double page spread...

First auto chrono's? Heuer ad from 1969...

    Utter cheese from Seiko...

    Cheers,
    Neil.

That Seiko ad ought to be a collector's item in its own right.

Whilst cheesy, it sticks in your mind which is half the battle from an advertiser's point of view.

What about the wacky stuff on wrists?

Here are some weird things found on wrists.

    I love this 1957 advert.

    The 1946 Montilier "Telefoot" watch.

This one never got off the drawing board, but I wish it had.
    1970 Bulova planet watch.

Or a 1915 alarm watch that cuts off your blood supply?

Another alarm watch, but this 1918 invention burnt you and your screams woke everyone!

How about a vivarium for body lice?
    1918 "feed your own"...

Something a little more normal, a 1922 golf stroke counter.

And lastly a 1923 police officer glove with lamp.

Fabulous stuff, OP, and the other posters - some lovely watches and adverts there. Aren't the Rolex adverts (in particular) wordy! Wouldn't got down with a modern attention span. I just showed a couple to the wife, and she commented that in the good old days, we could be swayed by facts and information, rather than... well. Brands and sex!

Love the Montpelier Telefoot - am I right? That's a mono-pusher minute chrono with no chrono minutes? Nope, just read it again - I think it's a second minute hand that's slaved to the main minute hand, and resets to 12 at the push of the button. Fabulous.

Yup. same principle like this Sicura I have, and works similar to the Omega Chronostop.

    1970's Sicura Rally GT4B.

    1929.

    1942

    1973.

    1937.

    Another semi-weird one from 1971.

    1940.

    1917.
One of only two ads for the Omega (far left) Chronograph worn/owned by Lawrence of Arabia.

    I have hundreds more...

A lot of those older Japanese ads often bring a bit of a laugh.

As well as that awful Seiko one I posted, here we have a sort of homo-erotic version for the 6139 with old goggles gazingly lovingly at his pouting boyfriend.

    And as for the Winker.........
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Nothing cheesy about the Seiko ad at all, it's just the reaction you achieve when you strap on a Seiko - especially an MM300 on rubber

One of the abiding memories from being a youngster was leafing through NG mags and being marvelled by a). the photographs and b). the watch ads.

    Great thread.
