    Options for Selling Watch Collection

    Hi

Hopefully I'm not infringing any forum policies!

I posted previously (http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...ifying-Watches) trying to get some details of watches from my late uncles collection.
I've managed to get some information on most of the watches, as well as some varying valuations.

My dad took the watches to a local jeweller who specialises in selling second hand watches but I think some of the offers are very low and his research was worse than mine!
The gold rolex in the collection they basically said the president bracelet was only worth the scrap value which sounds suspicious to me.

Can anybody recommend any good ways to try and sell these watches, should we try another jeweller or is it safe to use an online auction site?
I guess if I get my post count up then I could sell some on here but have a way to go.

    Thanks

    Paul

go on line (Chrono24) and compare the prices . Check condition, box, papers, etc and get an estimated value for each.

Then assume The dealer will offer you 20/25% less. Auction houses charge a seller premium as do EBay.

Not perfect, but an excellent start.

In respect to the gold Rolex, the dealer might have said scrap if it was completely worn out. However it would have to be completely shot to be worth scrap. The minimum value of a president on a gold band would be £6K and up, unless it's been messed about with. A nice one could be worth 7K and up depending on the model.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, I've not seen many president bracelets but I didn't think it was too bad:

I've got some prices already from Chrono24 / ebay and previous auctions. Just trying to work out the best option to sell them and get a good balance of ease of sale, safety of transaction and getting the best price.

As you will see from the photo its actually a Rolex Date (14k) on a president strap - so not original but would still expect it to be worth more than the offer.

Would you please post a good, well-focused close-up image of the markings inside the bracelet clasp ?

What is the model reference, 15037?

    Thankyou,

    HM

I don't have the watch here, but I have the following pic:

Just checked my notes, yes it is a 15037 dated 1982.

Not the most popular reference. The 34mm size makes it less appealing than the datejust.

Only comparable one I can find sold for £2500 in eBay but was in far better shape.

I'd like a closer look at that bracelet, especially these parts :

As for earlier comments, an acrylic glass / 1500-series calibre / 14ct 15xx7 OP Date is not an 18ct Day-Date and comments about "Presidents on a bracelet" (what is one of those?) being worth X-Y are over-stated. A distorted, worn or in-any-part fake President bracelet really is a serious problem.

I had three acrylic glass 18ct Dates recently and they have nothing like the market of Day-Dates.

As for Day-Dates, a 1500-series calibre 1803 series watch with a bracelet at the end of its life is very different from a tidy 3000-series calibre 18038 / 18238 series with a decent bracelet.

I believe the Oyster booklet is newer than the watch. Is there a date code on the back cover, in the format "6.1996" ?

Whom did you visit in Chester?

Completely overstated as I assumed it was a 1803 day date or 18038. My Bad.

Sorry, if I have over-set expectations.

No not at all, and appreciate the help. Should still be worth more than I've been offered. Think I may have to do some work myself in order to help get the best prices.

Hopefully I may pick up a couple of items to kick start my own collection.

The watches were taken to a jeweller near Cambridge.

    Got to agree with this!!
The last two sales I did on fleabay cost me a fortune!!!!

I suppose it boils down to putting them somewhere like here at a good discount price or go to an auction site and get even less??

I don't think the OP has another option than eBay unless one of the dealers has already approached him about buying the whole collection?!?!
If it was me I'd buy a few myself like the OP has said he possibly will then look at putting a couple on EBay to test the water but make sure you list them taking into account the offers that will come in and the fees on top?

Good luck and I wouldn't mind the Tudor myself for my old man? Let us know where you list them anyway?

Thanks, I don't fancy going through eBay but might end up listing a few on there at the end if I can't shift them elsewhere.

Personally I quite like the Tudor so might pick that one up for myself. I also fancy the Omega Calibre 265 and possibly the Rolex 1002.
