    Boy's watch

    Hello.

My son (nearly 5) has expressed an interest in a watch 'with hands that go round' and that 'glows in the dark', like my watches (these tend to be in a british military style, PRS-29A and a seiko gen 2 chrono and a marathon SAR until sold recently).

Both sets of grandparents have bought him plastic digital watches of low quality which he has little interest in.

Is there a small, light, quartz analog watch that is suitable for a boy of 5 that is cheap but not junk (i.e. good value)? I anticipate that he will likely not wear it often at this point but might in a year or two.

    Thanks.

I found it difficult to get a watch small and light enough which was not a toy and didn't have dinosaurs, Power Rangers, etc plastered everywhere. Look at Sekonda, they had some good options. Got their black divers one from Amazon. My kids like them.

How about a 2nd hand CWC or Pulsar W10?
These are still quite cheap (<£100 can be had under £50) and it's easy to put a hole in a NATO to make it fit a small wrist. They might be a bit big on a 5 year old though?
There are also the timex field watches. These are quite small.

https://www.flikflak.com/en/ - some is quite childish (for obvious reasons!) but they do watches that aren't.

    For instance: https://www.flikflak.com/en/watches/...rkeling-black/

After the FlikFlak stage, Vostok Amphibia has been a real hit and they joy of changing Natos has gone down a treat.

My boys started off with Timex. The ones with indiglo are great, the kids love em.

as stated above, nearly five = flikflak

a five year old would benefit from something a little bit more visually engaging than the mil style timex above imho

why not pm tootall on here, he collects flikflaks ( has nearly two hundred iirc)
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

My first instinct would be a G10 (either CWC or Pulsar) but the lume might be starting to fade one one that's affordable. That Timex looks pretty good, especially for the price.

I suppose you could also get a CWC and have it re-lumed.

No specific suggestion, but may be worth looking for a ladies watch as size is likely be good, and I am sure there would be a decent selection of plain small watches that look more unisex

g10 for a four year old? might as well go the whole hog and recommend a no date sub before anyone else does.

I was thinking of a ladies sized watch, I'm not sure why I didn't come out and say it!

Certainly some of the larger watches mentioned may be good in a few more years but seem too large now. Flikflak is an interesting suggestion, I may be over interpreting his desire for a BMW style as this is my own preference. I think the timex may be more his thing than a flikflak but not sure.

His main requirements seem to be hands and most importantly lume! Not sure about lume on the flikflaks. Being able to see the time when under the duvet cover is mission critical.

A bit more expensive but you can pick them up on eBay cheap.
I paid £60 for mine if I recall.
    The glow like a torch.

Yep, tritium would delight him I think, but probably they are too big, and maybe a bit expensive for him to be trusted with.

Now you're just being plain daft as you forgot to mention "whilst driving his MX-5" ;-)

You can see the size dimensions in comparison to these other watches - it looks like a boys watch so may fit nicely

I just bought an old-stock Mirvaine ladies quartz diver on eBay for my son (9) for the princely sum of £7. New battery, strap re-sized and he's got a sub-a-like for under a tenner!

Mine both have a Tag F1 from the mid '80s. One pinched mine, that I had bought new, when he was 5 and loved it so had to hunt one down for his younger brother when he turned 5. Means they are robust and waterproof - watches not the boys :-)

Same as above. My youngest has a lady's size vintage F1 - cool as a cucumber :)
