    Old bands with new members

I have to plan a trip to NYC in the summer and one option that I have seen is Queen in concert with Adam Lambert.

Having been fortunate enough to see Queen twice with Freddie I wonder whether this would be a good experience or just suffer in comparison.

    Any of you seen Queen?

Any thoughts on rebuilt bands in general.

    Old bands with new members

The Stones did all right. AC/DC makes it a habit unfortunately. Led Zeppelin were proper gents about it. Even Genesis managed. But a front man is a hard act to follow, FM 10 times so.

Edit: this was not meant to be exhaustive but I must add Pink Floyd.

Unfortunately I never saw Queen live. A couple of years ago I saw Queen Extravaganza (the official "tribute act") live in Manchester though, which was excellent.

And last year saw Graham Gouldman's touring 10cc band in London, which was a brilliant evening even with Eric's place taken by an unknown bloke described in one review as a "cheesy redcoat ".

Let's face it- many of the rock stars of the '70s are either dead or on their last legs. Im now on a bit of a mission to see those who are still around perform while they are still with us.

Don't really like rebuilt bands although any of the older rock bands are bound to have had a few casualties.

Not a Queen fan at all but Freddie was a huge part of it and seems an impossible act to follow as it were.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Big (original) Queen fan - wouldn't go to see them now. Depends on the missing person/people and their successor.

AC/DC are my fave and have got used to Brian, but if Angus leaves as well................

GnR aren't the same even with Slash and Axl!.........

It wouldn't be much AC/DC without Angus though would it ?

How many members can you replace before you lose the right to the name?

Blood, Sweat & Tears, Yes and Deep Purple seem to think it doesn't matter.

Uriah Heep are a good example - only one remaining member (Mick Box) from the original line up.

To be fair the last time I heard anything of Raffe's or Velorum's it was their old stuff. Nothing new since 30 to 40 years ago

Fair enough, but then I rather enjoy some original recordings than watch the final final final farewell tour, only for it to be repeated a year later.

I saw Queen in 1975 at the Liverpool Empire on the Night at the Opera tour (the one made famous by the Xmas eve gig at the Hammersmith Odeon that the BBC shows) and again at the same venue in 1977.

My brother was with me on both occasions and he went last year to see Queen with Adam Lambert and said that the gig was superb.

If you go, just enjoy the music and don't think about Freddie.

One of my favourite bands, Tangerine Dream, now has no original members after the death of Edgar Froese, and yet the latest material is very highly thought of. It all depends on the band. The Beach Boys have essentially been a tribute act for years. Yes has evolved over time but now Chris Squire has passed i think the heartbeat of the band is gone. Generally speaking there are one or two members in a band who are essential to the feel of that band and when you lose these it's over. Some bands need all members - Led Zep or the The Who - but with others changes help the music evolve.

Have had a chat with a couple of friends one of whom saw Queen on The Kind of Magic tour and she gave Adam Lambert the thumbs up .
Apparently he is not trying to be Freddie but still has a bit of showman.
So took the plunge and tickets are being booked.
Think I will have a Queen revival at work to get in the mood.

For those who don't remember the Kind of Magic tour it had The Quo and The Alarm as 2 and 3 on the bill and the concert started with this unknown band called INXS - not too shabby but feeling old today!

I was never a big Queen fan but I went to Knebworth in '86. It was a good day and a good show.

I'm a Big Country fan, wouldn't dream of watching them now after the passing of Stuart Adamson.

I saw this tour at Maine Road Manchester and whilst it was Queen & Quo, the opening act was Belouis Some.

    Excellent day.

Went to see Thin Lizzy ten years ago at NECC.........

As I said at the time - "they were one death away from being a crap tribute band"

Deep Purple and Styx shared the night............

    Deep Purple were pretty good.

    Styx were absolutely brilliant.

I saw Queen at Knebworth (granted I was only 14, but was blown away by them).

A couple of years ago I saw the tribute act "Killer Queen", who play stadiums. It was pretty close to be honest...and brought back great memories.

    Watch and enjoy...

I'm hoping 3 out of 4 original members won't make it a tribute band.

I have heard good reviews of Adam Lambert.

...surely two out of four, unless John Deacon's decided to rejoin?

I wouldn't go, because to me if it ain't Freddie, it ain't Queen!

I do feel sorry for Brian May and Roger Taylor though.

They clearly want to carry on performing their songs, and I can see why.

If people wanna pay to see it, then fair enough.

    I still wouldn't though.......

I thought Paul Rogers did a pretty good job, and didn't try to copy Mercury's style in doing it.

Is John not in the line up ? Saw a clip and saw 3 grey haired old men and assumed it was him. Lets face it the camera never lingered long on him 30 years ago either.

My wife asked who the guy was with the long blond locks and was horrified when I said it was a grey Brian May.

I thought he was poor personally, but then again I don't think anyone could hold a candle to Freddie as he was so good.

I believe John deacon was something of a minor "recluse" and didn't really like the fame (probably quite liked the fortune though!)

Given that the iPod which is my constant travelling companion has around 11,500 tracks on it, the appeal of having a library of classic albums on tap isn't lost on me.

Even so, live music is one of life's greatest pleasures, whether the "real thing", tribute band, pub band, jazz club or busker.

I had never even heard of the concept of tribute bands before coming to the UK (sheltered life, much?) but went with friends to the Leas in Folkestone to see the Australian Pink Floyd and I must say I was rather impressed.

One of my "greatest pleasures" is to make my own live music.

Cuts out the tribute middle man if the real thing isn't available.

It’s really sad when bands continue past there sell by date. But it’s a dichotomy for all of us music fans?

Dr Feelgood still go on nearly 25 years after Lee’s passing. It infuriates Wilko.Scott Gorhams Thin Lizzy did the same thing until Phil Lynott’s Mother pulled the plug.
How can Queen exist without Freddie Mercury? No John Deacon too?
I’m going to see Martin Turners Wishbone Ash soon as he and Andy Powell hate each other’s guts.
I’m also going to see the Australian Pink Floyd later in the year.
At least Iron Maiden who I’m seeing on Sunday have most of the original band still!!

I saw Napalm Death a couple of weeks ago - they have none of the original members, but all 4 members have been in the band since 1991 so I suppose that is OK....

If you are a fan of Thin Lizzy's music - I'd thoroughly recommend trying to see "Lymehouse Lizzy".

Check out on Youtube - they really are rather good, and worth checking out - live.
