Thread: Parquet flooring

    Parquet flooring

In the house I've just purchased the hallway and lounge are in original oak parquet herringbone blocks. It looks great but after nearly 100yrs needs sanding and treating. I was surprised how expensive it is to get this done
£700 approx for 30sq mtrs. Anyone else had there's sanded ? Any advice ?
    Cheers Andy

It's not really that hard if you've got a bit of diy knowledge, hire a good sander ,with some different grade belts and go over it a couple of times ,then get some water based lacquer and roll it on ,giving it a light rub in between coats with really fine paper

Had a price for 22 m2 last week on a Fire Station we are decorating while it's refurbished. £800 minimum charge. He justified it by 2 men two days plus materials, sounds about right. It would be plus VAT by the way

£700 doesn't sound bad to be honest.

I've bought, laid, sanded and sealed reclaimed oak flooring. "Not hard" can mean several things- it isn't terribly difficult work but using a floor sanding machine is bloody hard on the back and arms!

That said, re-doing an existing floor will be easier than sanding newly laid reclaimed boards from an old dancefloor, as the reclaimed boards were different thicknesses on account of different wear patterns depending on where in the old floor they were situated, so I had to level off 2-3mm steps in some instances.

Definitely hire a floor sanding machine for a long weekend - forget trying to use a little handheld sander. And prebook your preference of chiro session / acupuncture / naked Thai girl walking barefoot around your back and shoulders for afterwards.
