I wear a 45mm FF dark knight and have got used to it's size. The 48mm lug to lug helps on my 6.7" wrist.
I bought a 43mm bathyscaphe but found the straight lugs caused overhang so sold it.
Today I was invited to try the mil spec and 38mm bathyscaphe.

Of the two, the blue bathyscaphe was my favourite but at 38mm was too small for my taste. The mil spec was lovely but with the thick bezel wore smaller than I was hoping.

Next to my dark knight it looks titchy.

I was then introduced to a Basel model I must have missed. A 45mm FF with blue dial and blue bezel in brushed titanium. It was gorgeous and is now top of my shopping list. In my excitement I didn't take a pic. ARGGGGHH.

I was at the Blancpain boutique in New Bond Street. The assistant gave the impression I could order one but I didn't ask as was unsure. She said it was limited to 500 but did not say they were all sold.

I was told a couple of weeks ago when I tried one on, that the boutique were getting three and all had a name against them.

I've heard 5 watches to the Amsterdam Tourbillon store and a waiting list of 55 people.
So my guess is all 500 are pre booked. Very much looking forward to getting mine even if the delivery now seems to be due September/October. :(

And thanks to the photos guys! It's almost worth a trip to London to see it in the flesh even if I have ordered one. :)

New Bond St. should be getting them in - very friendly staff.

Slightly off topic. With my schoolboy French, Blancpain translates to English as "white bread". Would you buy a watch called a "Whitebread"? 😀😀

That's exactly what my wife called mine. If you translate as a single word it stays the same, but split it into two words and you get white bread.

It did hack me off a bit having my watch referred to as white bread.

    Don't miss it.

Well, it's a surname, so the more exact translation would be "Whitbread".

Presumably the original family name arose from a family of craftsman bakers who were known for the refinement of their bread in a time when most bread was coarser than we are now conditioned to expect.

Original owner was Villeret and then taken over by Blancpain.
For a while the name was Rayville-Blancpain, Rayville being a phonetic anagram of Villeret.

Is this mil-spec a keeper for the people that are buying here? Or do people think since it is limited to 500, there might be an interest in the future?

Reading the thread would suggest that anyone lucky enough to have bagged one will be keeping it.

Clearly it is another hot watch with demand outstripping supply so logically a good one for the future.

I never buy a watch simply to pass it on for profit but if I feel like sellin it in a few years I think I'll get my money back.

Must be getting close to the time for the AD to call :)
Anyone heard any updates on the ETA for the Milspec?

All I've heard is September/October and my guess is no one will get theirs this month. With just 500 available, they should be able to ship them out all at once.

i dont know if this is a boring watch or one i want right now...

  24. #174
This watch shows why going with 'normal' colour lume is so much better than the faux crap. Done so well IMO. Oh and the first 'dive' watch in a long time I find is outstanding....

The dial and bezel makes for a big difference in perceived quality. And the bezel action is miles apart. Size wise they are very alike, like them both but the SLA017 will probably be sold after my Japan trip, I don't like to have as many watches as I do now and my plan is to buy a GS pretty soon.

The dial of the Milspec has a very dark black color when shaded which is very very nice and also very hard to capture on photos, the sunburst comes alive only in direct sunlight. I'll do my best to capture it in a few days when I take new photos for the review.

That Mil-Spec one looks absolutely stunning! Had thought that I would never buy another 'proper money' diver as I am happy with my Submariner... but that's lovely enough and different enough to maybe go on the 'one day' list...

Top work - un boxed in the car, stickers off and on the wrist. As you said - what a day to forget the Victorinox ! Lovely watch too and glad you like it and was worth the wait - enjoy !

One of the best dive releases in a while. It just looks 'stunning'.

    I have around 10 divers right now so I'm thinking GMT, a sbgj203 perhaps, or a sbgr305.
I was planning to buy a gold rotor factory store edition at the SII factory but they sadly haven't converted the models to the new dial versions yet.

I think it's stunning and one of the best releases of the year. For me though it's too small and so wish they'd have gone somewhere in between traditional and current, say 42mm. Please don't take that as a negative, I'm still very jealous!

I don't mind that comment at all, I agree!

I think they (BP) were a little lazy by using the old 40mm case instead of making a completely new 42mm case. 45mm is a little too large for EDC while 40mm is borderlining on too small. Don't get me wrong, I love it and I think 40mm wears just fine but with a 18cm wrist, I would probably love a 42mm even more. The BP FF case is famous for wearing small. I'm only 30 hrs or so in this and so far I'm very happy with it, wearing it on a nato also makes it feel a little larger which I like.

All exactly as my own thoughts. I don't think they could make this 'wrong' and although the FF is said to wear small, it's still a big watch. Mad how we think 2mm would make a difference, but my 19cm wrist would love it!

Seriously cool and the nato adds to that for sure. Enjoy.

    But of a necropost,
It's been a while, but mine finally landed today!

Bracelet is a proper PITA to size though, think i'll have a go with some straps later this week.
